It's official!!!

Sir Mark Cavendish (aka The Manx Missile) is now the best sprinter in the world of Tour de France road cycling, yesterday beating the 4 decade long record of 34 stage wins by the great Eddie Merckx.
Cav took his 35th stage win on the 5th stage of the Tour de France and I am just so, so pleased for the man

Absolutely awesome ride by Tadej Pogacar today.
I'm starting to think the only thing that'll beat him is himself or the strain of Covid running through the ranks

Seems grossly irresponsible for Geraint Thomas to keep riding, bizarre choice. At best he'll have a torrid week suffering with 'mild' symptoms, at worst he'll infect dozens of other riders.

Awesome that Cav got the stage win, so pleased for him, and wonderful to see the queues of people wanting to congratulate him!

The GC race has been great, Vingegaard has been far stronger than I expected, but Pogacar certainly put his stamp on the race today.

I was seriously brassed off about Cav's penalty for 'veering' as what else was he supposed to do? Just run headlong into another rider? All he did was take avoiding action, from what I saw of it.

An amusing incident on Pogacar's stunning ride yesterday - he collected a drinks bottle from a support car and, rather than chuck the empty one on the road he lobbed it through the open rear window of another support car and then realised it wasn't his team's vehicle

Yes I imagine the Intermarche guys were a little caught off guard by that one.

A stunning ride by Pogacar this year. He and Vingegaard are just on another level. In any other year Evenepoel would be smashing it too, I feel for him in a way. It's like a three-class race: Vingegaard and Pogacar, then Evenepoel, then everyone else.

I'm a bit sad there's no ceremonial stage tomorrow, it'll be odd just ending with a TT,feels anticlimactic.

Agree that time trial stages aren't the best for entertainment but it could still be interesting.
The gaps further down the top ten are close enough that things could still shift if someone has a good or bad ride.

In Paris preparation for the Olympics takes priority over everything else at the moment

Yeah totally understand it, just seems a shame for the sprinters not to have one final huraah. I'm surprised as many of them have slogged their way through the Alps! I imagine there'll be some moderately sedate* times set in the TT today while riders enjoy it!

*that's relative of course, as even their 'not trying' is still brutally quick!

As a sports fan, I'm thrilled about the Giro d'Italia starting on May 6, especially with Mark Cavendish in the race and Vincenzo Nibali possibly riding his last Giro. I'm no fan of Quest's pundits and much prefer ITV4 so have not watched a lot of the Vuelta this year. Guess I've binged on cycling what with the TdF and the Olympic track cycling

Great first stage of the Tour of Britain today.

Passing through my neck of the woods so I was roadside watching laps 1 and 2.
Even found a discarded bidon as a souvenir

Some big names taking part (Remco, Pidcock, Alaphilippe etc) so well worth a look.
