Assuming it is the member I suspect,

I think a lot of us know who we are referring to. I have had problems in the past, via PM's with this person, but I agree with @Ed . Nobody is perfect and we all do/say things that annoy people sometimes. Okay, some more than others, but I think we should cut this person a bit of slack.

Quote from: Newportnobby on October 23, 2023, 09:02:02 AMThere is absolutely no reason why you can't report a post to the Moderators requesting it be removed from your own thread.
The Moderators can then look at any responses maybe quoting that post and remove them as well if necessary

Exactly what I was about to write.  Report the posts you wish deleted.  I do advise messaging the person, and perhaps suggest they use the Reactions, unless they have something to contribute to the thread.

After careful consideration and taking in everybody's opinions I have messaged this member and asked them not to post on my layout thread. I haven't heard anything back yet but hopefully this will do the trick. Thanks all

It is slow for me as well, but I thought that was the recent post from @Chris in Prague causing the forum to overheat!  :)

Yep, same here too, though the earlier incident was definitely a forum issue, as everything else at the time was ok.

I'm noticing quite a few new users who are very very probably bots or link farming in some form.

Generally the trend seems to be to post something innocuous as a reply or even a new thread, usually in a non-N Gauge topic such as our general or computer topics. Then over the course of their mostly non relevant or neutral sounding posts get at least one link into their posts, hidden by making sure the link is hidden under a word like that (don't worry, I just linked back to the forum).

Assuming these aren't innocent posts, they're essentially trying to make other sites seem more popular by linking to them. Either for direct financial gain ("We can increase your SEO!") or linking to sites where they've planted something malicious that they'll cash in on later.

Is it possible within the current forum software to limit posting of links until after the user's made 10 valid posts (like it does for the N'Porium)? That might stop the site being a popular target for them if that's the case.

Newportnobby

Already mooted to @Tank as it will require some work done on the forum set up

Thank you.  I'm not able to stops links being posted, annoyingly.  However, I have now made all "Newbies" need to have their posts allowed before they appear.

I'll shortly ask for help from SMF (who created the forum) to stop so many bot accounts getting in.  It doesn't help that the Captcha stopped working.
