I'm surprised no one has mentioned the ignore list.

Trainfish

My understanding of the ignore button is that I just won't see their posts, is this correct? If so it doesn't really achieve what I think is needed as it would look like the conversation is disjointed if others comment on posts which I don't see. It would also still push my updates back to the previous page if the ignored poster continues to post.
I think I'm correct in my understanding of the ignore function but do let me know if not.

In April 2024 I will be raising money for Cancer Research UK by doing at least 100 press-ups every day.  Feel free to click on the picture to go to the donations page if you would like to help me to reach my target.

To follow the construction of my layout "Longcroft" from day 1, you'll have to catch the fish below first by clicking on it which isn't difficult right now as it's frozen!

perhaps you need a 'block' button instead >:D

You are correct. The posts would only be ignored by yourself and everyone else could read/respond.
Maybe @Tank will correct me if I'm wrong but there is no way for Admin/Mods to stop a person posting in certain sections. As Alan will know all too well, total post moderation is the only way to prevent anyone from posting without their posts being 'vetted'.
In this situation I believe it would be wrong on all counts to do that unless a large number of members were to complain

All seems a bit extreme to me, to block a few posts probably made with the best of intentions  :(

I must be the only person who uses the ignore button.

Might be fortunate in a way - think of all the forumites you would be sending to the 'naughty step'.  ;)

Do you mean like those who post bad jokes?  :D

Assuming it is the member I suspect, unfortunately he has 'form' for it across all areas of the forum...
Maybe he is (over) trying to be helpful, not realising he is adding nothing useful to the thread, but he blatantly either doesn't read or doesn't understand the threads he is posting in...
If you post "Product X is out of Stock at retailer Y, has anywhere else got any" he'll post a link to retailer Y's website.
He frequently posts incorrect information, then when he's corrected by someone else, he adds three more posts explaining how he sneezed while he was posting so couldn't see what he was typing, or had to answer a phone call which meant he forgot the question.
If you add up all his claimed service in various roles on the railway, he is at least 200 years old.
And goodness knows how many "Great photo" / "nice model" etc posts from him...

I know what you are saying - there have been some terrible ones posted lately!  ;)

I used to be indecisive - now I'm not - I don't think.

I agree that some suggestions are extreme but I do believe that my suggestion for thread starters/owners particularly in the Layout construction section to be able to in effect moderate their own thread is a valid suggestion.

Yes it is the member who you suspect as I have seen the posts in my thread which you have 'reacted' to. Yes, he is trying to be helpful but unfortunately he usually achieves the opposite which is rather frustrating. The perfect example is, and I apologise for repeating this, in this post of mine where I specifically requested people not to post results of google searches to then see a reply just 6 minutes later with results from a google search by this individual. I could maybe have responded in a calmer manner than I actually did but as this is such a regular occurence I decided that I'd had enough and called him out on it. Since then I have had PMs from 3 or 4 people who applauded me for calling him out and judging from responses both here and in my layout thread there are plenty of people who agree with me.
If something can be done along the lines of my suggestion then great. If not then so be it but it may reduce the number of posts I make in future. I actually have an update to post on my layout thread tonight including some pictures but I'm not in the right frame of mind to do it right now, sorry to those who enjoy and react to my updates, knowing that there will be a response from this member within minutes with either the results of yet another google search or a "Great photo" / "nice model" comment (phrase 'stolen' from @PLD) to get his post count up even higher than the 15,000+ he already has. That's the 3rd highest post count on the forum by the way with the only 2 above him being mods who have been on the forum 3 years longer than he has. My own post count is just a third of his and again, I have been a member here for 3 more years than him. I've even been a member here longer than @Newportnobby according to the member list. Only 2 days longer but still  :D

That's enough from me for now and I may post my update tomorrow or during the week on my layout thread, sorry for the hesitancy to post it tonight but I don't want to go to bed in an angry mood.

There is another important success criterion that you might consider. Your layout actually runs. @Newportnobby 's doesn't (and neither does mine).

There is absolutely no reason why you can't report a post to the Moderators requesting it be removed from your own thread.
The Moderators can then look at any responses maybe quoting that post and remove them as well if necessary

It is when the moderators knock on your door at 5am demanding a part of your layout that offended someone that you have to worry.

Although for some layouts that might not be a bad thing...
