I bought (£5.35) a pack of these axle hung track cleaning pads to see what they were like.

There are three in the pack and they clip onto the axle very easily.  It was a bit fiddly getting the boxcar onto the track with the pad fitted but after a couple of attempts it was on and connected up to a loco.
I set it off and left it running for about an hour on an oval track.  It ran without any problems, no derailments and when I removed the boxcar and took the pad off the axle the results are shown in the photograph of the used pad next to an unused one
I would be quite happy to have one of these connected on every train as they are hardly visible and appear to work well.

cheers John.

Agreed .  A great little unit to use 'in train' during running sessions
I do pre-wipe the track with one of these wetted with cleaning fluid

All my guards vans are fitted with them as are the CCT vans on the passenger express trains.  The only thing I can't fit them to are bogie coaching stock, just not enough room between the wheel sets on each bogie.  :(

Although I try and keep my track clean with a good wipe with an IPA soaked piece of cloth it is amazing just how much more these pick up.  As has been said, a quick rinse in some IPA has them clean and ready to go again.   :)

Interesting... question though... how does it go over complex point work? Bit different to running round and round...  :confused2:

No problem George, never had a problem with them anywhere on Claywell, crossover, double slips, scissors crossing and my fairly complex terminus are all navigated without any sort of problem.

I would say, I have now reduced the width of mine so they flap up inside the wagon side frames, when I first used them I altered the side frames of a couple of guards vans to allow the full width but now just trim them to fit inside.    ;)

Presumably they are hanging right off the very end of the van in order to make contact with the top of the rails? I have visions of them just cleaning the sleepers and ballast between!

They hand inside the vehicle, if you put them outside then when you go around a curve the pad would be too far off line.  Here's some pics of some of mine fitted to a GWR Toad and Dapol CCT.  Note, for the Dapol wagons you have to ease the clips open slightly as the Dapol axles are quite thick due to their insulated design.

Brilliant. Thanks, Caz. Great pics, too - I can see the way it works now. Thanks!

I usually run them with the axle that the pad is fitted to trailing in the belief that it forces the pad into better contact with the rail.   My layout although a roundy roundy is also out and back so they run both ways anyway without any problem.   :)

Having read the comments on these, I've just ordered myself a couple of packs to try. Although I keep my own layout track nice and clean, my club's layout get very dirty so I'm looking forward to seeing how well they work there.
