Plenty of history in and around Bridgnorth, Shropshire.
Bridgnorth (on the river Severn) is very quaint with a 'High Town' and 'Low Town' + castle ruins + cliff railway + Severn Valley Heritage Railway. Nearby is the first cast iron bridge by Thomas Telford and Blists Hill Industrial Museum.

A breathtaking scenic ride on the Settle and Carlisle plus the Cumbrian Coast line and plenty to do with words worth  Beatrix potter

Good one. Wales will be on the list no matter what.

This has been pushed back a few years.

This will be a "standing stones and railways" emphasis.

Looking to stay a month. Wife still in tow.

Spend as little as possible on what you need so you can spend as much as possible on what you want.

I think the 1000 year old castles are still the same ones as 5 years ago.

Quite why you'd re-visit Stonehenge is beyond me, once is careless enough.

Personally I would focus on some 'bases' and go from there. 30 different hotels in a month will not be particularly relaxing, and will leave you spending most of your trip in the car. Americans usually laugh at this notion and draft an itinerary which sees them have breakfast in Penzance, lunch in Skegness and dinner at Loch Ness, because they regularly drive 200 miles for coffee, but that strikes me as utter hell.

The whole country is, frankly, awash with heritage, including railways, I'm not convinced you'll glean much from 50 different recommendations here. If it were me I would probably focus on:

- London
- Yorkshire
- North Wales
- Scottish Highlands

With a week in each. Well I wouldn't, as that's too long for me, but that's probably what I'd recommend!

Bases are part of the plan. We're veteran travelers, including our initial UK trip.

Standing Stones = not just Stonehenge,  though I will absolutely go again. We did the behind-the-ropes sunrise visit, and will do so again. I couldn't tolerate just looking at them from afar.

But my main emphasis is other standing stones: obscure or not.  :)

We did London. That was fantastic in 2009. A bit concerned in proposed 2030 (revised retirement date).

I will continue to reference and distill this thread on and off.

Castlerigg stone circle beneath Blencathra in the Lake District they're only little, but cool. I took this picture in 2014, but I'd like to think they're still there:

Vision over visibility. Bono, U2.

Concerned about London why? Don't buy into any of the insane rhetoric purveyed mainly by the American media. If you've 'done it' then I wouldn't necessarily focus on it again. Aside from some (/a lot of) new skyscrapers in the City it hasn't really changed in 15 years.

I stand by my point - asking for the 'not to be missed' destinations will yield you 50 different responses. This thread is already full of nice enough places to while away a couple of hours. Itinerary by committee will be horrible. Choose some areas, even if by exclusion, or by throwing darts at a map, and go from there.
