Arnold FS E656 loco era difference question
« on: September 14, 2020, 10:28:30 AM »
Hi all,

Although I model France and Spain, I really want one of the FS E656s when they are released as it would remind me of travelling through Italy with my late father in the '80s/'90s.

I've probably missed the boat on the ordering front but quick question, what is the difference between the era IV and era V models?

I don't know much about Italian railways so any help appreciated. The era V loco looks light grey and blue rather than white and blue with the era IV in the Arnold pics but that might just be the light. If not, are there any other noticeable differences? EDIT did notice the window rims are white/silver on the era IV but they might be different on the model.

Thanks again, weave  :beers:

Hi there,

This is a model that interests me too.

I have pre-ordered Epoch IV as that seems to suit my recollections of these from the 1980s.  I don't know enough to give a detailed asnwer to your question, but this page may help:

The window rims are dependent on the series of the loco.  I believe only the later versions (series 6) had black rubber rims.

cheers

Ben A.

Hi,
The external differences between the two series are the window rims:
the 5th has the window rims made by gum..than the 4th that is made by steel
Internal , main difference is that the 4th serie has the static converter for auxiliary services at 180 KVa than 120  KVa to operate under wires in Modane and Ventimiglia french section.

I have asked myself the same question.

I think that both blue/grey, HN2511 and -12, are equally suitable for epoch IV. Both photos show the old FS TV logo on the front and I canít see a reason why one should be epoch V and the other IV.

So
era IV and era V is the same livery, starting by mid V era came out the XMPR livery...white with red stripe, now swapped in IC-sun livery..white with red stripe similar to the DB bahn.
