Which decoder
« on: March 15, 2020, 04:20:42 PM »
I'm slowly getting back into model railways after a few years and going straight into digital.  I'm into continental and recently bought a Hobbytrain Vectron H3121. How do I find out which decoder to buy for it? My last loco was easy as Fleischmann gave me the part number and I bought the Zimo equivalent but Hobbytrain doesn't seem to do this!

The Hobbytrain Vectron H3121s (sound version) states the decoder to be a Next 18 type so I would expect the non-sound version to also be a Next 18. Perhaps someone else could confirm.

Do the provided instructions not tell you?

This page also seems to confirm it's a Next18 socket

Here's an instruction sheet for Hobbytrain Vectron models from 2018 onward. Did you not get one with the loco?  It says Next18 interface

I think you are over thinking this.

Most manufacturers tell you the type of decoder socket and then it's up to you to buy a suitable decoder.

This loco has a Next18 socket so you need a Next18 decoder. Zimo make just one non sound Next18 decoder, the MX618N18. Other manufacturers typically have just one Next18 non sound decoder as well, if they have one at all.
