Dapol 2D-028-001 Class 26 D5316 in BR green
« on: February 26, 2020, 07:55:51 AM »
I've just spotted this and notice it is fitted with a Next 18 socket. Does anyone know if there is a speaker on board already, or if not if there is room to fit one?

Cheers
Dave

No chance... Its the same chassis and board with the 6 pin socket swapped out for a nx 18 socket. If you want speaker space you have to cut the other side of the chassis to look like the side with on board..

Also note that there are two Next18 standards.   No idea if makers are adhering to them or not (various UK makers have a habit of ignoring standards when it suits them).
https://www.morop.org/downloads/nem/de/nem662_d.pdf

The first covers non-sound decoders, and specifies both the socket and the space for the decoder.

The second covers sound decoders, and specifies the socket and a larger space for a sound decoder.

So, the model should say which type of Next18 socket+space is fitted, and have enough space for the relevant type of decoder.

What you have mentioned is a right can of worms. A good example is the new dapol 86. It has a nx18 board and soldier tabs on the board for speaker wires. To start with a nx18 sound decoder will NOT fit unless you remove the weight from out of the top of the shell. There is no space for a proper speaker. I insulated the board face with super glue and used black tac to build a sound chamber.. It works very well with good volume. The reason we are faced with this :censored: situation is that dapol have developed their own decoders and are making it so only their decoders fit. The problem with this is the guy they have now employed to do the sound doesn't have a clue meaning the sounds are also :censored:. A very frustrating situation....

Source needed on Dapol having developed their own sound decoders. Last I checked Dapol factory sound was now Zimo decoders and I seriously doubt Zimo are going to make customised decoders for a a company as relatively small as Dapol.

Dapol's recent trend towards updating chassis' for Next18 is 99% likely to be more for independant control of lights and 1% so their own branded Imperium decoder will fit since they've never actually bothered branding up a 6pin as Imperium.
