If you mean the PCF8574 module, using it for a keypad matrix carries very little current no pull ups required either. I've had no problems using them for this purpose but have not used them for any other purpose.

A PCF8574 used for remote inputs is fine - using it as an output to drive an NPN transistor requires the pullup.

I see what you meant now Ron. I never looked into using them for output drivers but I have a couple of spare ones that I will probably use at some point in another project so I'll keep that in mind. The output drivers for leds on my panel are the PCA9685 servo driver modules that I originally intended to use for servos so I just repurposed them for driving the leds.
