I've used PlazaJapan a few times and always found them to be quite good.

Yes, I know they can be imported to the UK from Japan. This however usually entails a Royal Mail handling charge and HMRC Tax which is almost as much again as the chassis.

Not really what I want to do. :laughabovepost:

Even if you get it sent as a gift, the sender still has to declare the value and HMRC are free to open it and check anyhoo, either way Royal Fail will still charge you for delivering it to the Tax man first of all before eventually bringing it to you.
If you can't find one kicking about supplied from the UK, you may have to cough up the extras. I think I have been caught every (four) time in the last 12 months so I wish you luck

If HMRC do open it and decide you were trying to avoid paying the import tax they will fine you and you will also not receive the item.  Having worked for RM at Gatwick HMRC aren't stupid and take with a pinch of salt what people declare. It just isn't worth the risk as ultimately they will view it as fraud.

It's not extortionate if you were to see the extra work RM for instance has to undertake. A whole department to deal with it on behalf of HMRC, who should pay for that? Also RM pay HMRC on your behalf to speed up the process and get the parcel released and then rely on you to pay them back.
Everyone wants something for nothing. RM's handling fee is nowhere near the highest. Simple answer is to purchase from a UK supplier where all these costs have already been paid.

HMRC are a Government department therefore the government should pay for it if they want to recoup the tax

Also RM pay HMRC on your behalf to speed up the process and get the parcel released and then rely on you to pay them back.
You have to pay whatever they demand to get your goods, it's not a case of paying them back, it's pay up or you don't get them.

Everyone wants something for nothing. RM's handling fee is nowhere near the highest. Simple answer is to purchase from a UK supplier where all these costs have already been paid.

The fees are set by HMRC across the board, but different handlers negotiated different fees, it should be a flat fee if there is to be one at all, not about getting something for nothing. They (Government/HMRC) impose the taxes which the end user has to pay, and we have to pay them to do their jobs as well! Ludicrous
Also, what if the item you want is not available from a UK supplier? Are we not to broaden our horizons because of yet another tax?

Hey guys, I didn't expect to raise a hornet's nest with this.

I do not believe I am trying to get something for nothing as Brighton has said.

I have failed to find a UK supplier for the item. If there is one I'd gladly source from them. There are European suppliers also, I believe American. I am at the disadvantage of not being able to calculate the cost of importing from Japan as neither the Royal Mail charge or HMRC Tax element are transparent. If this was calculated and was found to be the cheapest option against sourcing from America or Europe I'd do so.

All this pedantic nonsense about how great and gracious the RM are in relieving HMRC of chasing individuals for tax is nonsensical twaddle.

Can we back to trying to find either a source of the chassis or forget this thread.

Apologies, just a difference of opinions.  If you use ebay you can set up an alert for the item you are looking for I believe. You might also want to get in touch with http://www.plusdaughters.co.uk/ they stock some Tomix and Kato stuff.
I tend to just bite the bullet and order from Plaza  :worried:

I don't call using terms such as 'nonsense' and 'twaddle' polite.

How to calculate the charge:

Up to 15 value (including p&p): Nil.

Over 15:

For model railways the charge is 20% VAT on the price (including p&p) plus the RM handling charge of 8.

So for a 20 item it would be 4 VAT + 8 = 12

and a 60 item it would be 12 VAT + 8 = 40.
