Channel 5 - West Highland Line in real time
« on: December 28, 2019, 11:14:59 AM »
Channel 5, Monday 30th December - 'World's Most Scenic Railway Journey

From the title you may think you have seen this before, but it is a 2 hour programme of the West Highland line in real time. It gets a very good write-up in my TV listing, so set your recorders!

Cheers,

Chris

I wonder if this is the same programme shown Christmas Day on Quest between 6pm and 8pm

I watched the one on QUEST.

Quite an unusual experience not having any commentary, but all the better for it. Realtime journey alternating views from different cameras placed about, within and outside the train giving great perspective of the scenery and workings of the train.

Particularly relevance for me as I remember walking many miles on the route when working with Network Rail. Nice to see they were eventually getting the rockfaces netted.

I seem to recall other 2 hour programmes about journeys by other means than rail, always without commentary. I believe they were intended just as 'chill' times for folks who literally just wanted to relax for a time.

I believe it's known as "slow television", they've done a narrow boat one too, just hours of real time footage with no overlaid audio. I love the concept!

I'll bet the Scottish one will be a bit more interesting than the one I watched in hospital.... real time across the Nullabor!

I enjoyed the West Highland Line episode, made on a sunny autumn day. I've done the trip on a rainy winter's day, and missed a lot of the beauty!

wondering how I can convince SWMBO to watch the narrow boat one, then perhaps I could get on without interruptions  :veryangry:

Just watched this on Chanel 5 and was disappointed. Sorry.

I found that the constant views along the top of the Black 5 too overpowering for the scenery and my favorite bits were the very few aerial shots with stirring music.

My wife and I saw enough to suggest a lot of beauty, but that film did not convince me of being worthy of the title of the programme.

I may have to work out how to make the journey to make up my own mind. I have got some stunning journeys across America to compare it with though.

Dammit! Who was the one who started this thread... me. Who missed the programme..........

Partial excuse - my wife was unwell (much better this morning, thank you for asking) but I even forgot to set the recorder. Thank heavens for catch-up TV!

Cheers,

Chris

watched it, as did SWMBO  :o

and we both thoroughly enjoyed it, which I was not expecting from her - two hours of railway  :bounce:

odd bits were a bit boring, but overall I like the idea, and if other subjects come up I shall endeavour to watch them.

nice not to have distracting voice over all the time.

might well watch again on catch up.

did wonder about a running in loop around the shed at an upper level, not now used in Inverknockie v.5 with just the mountain scenery and trees etc, which would also provide practice for my landscaping skills, or lack of.

Caught about half an hour of it on HD last night.  Relaxing viewing if you have nothing else to do but ultimately like the continental cab-ride videos I watch from time to time for scenery ideas, it all got a bit same-y for me.
