Sankei Studio Ghibli Spirited Away in N
« on: September 28, 2019, 11:01:31 PM »
As a lover of the work of Studio Ghibli I wonder if anyone on here has seen at close hand the 1/150 paper models by Sankei Studio form Spirited Away.  I am particularly interested in finding out if the train can be motorised.  I think a fascinating layout could be built using the various models. @railsquid

Sorry, nope, never heard of those. Despite living just around the corner, relatively speaking, from the Ghibli museum.

There are no online copies of the film available but this visual treatise will give you an idea.

I have to admit that, since I first saw Spirited Away, I wondered whether anyone made an N gauge model of that train. It is such a lovely old-fashioned 2 car DMU!

At first glance that looks a bit French to me (maybe it's the livery as much as the design), perhaps there's some sort of Autorail that is close?

Alternatively something South American?

It's a 1/150 paper kit and I think it could be mounted on a Greenmax chassis.

Looks lovely. Interior detail shot here:

And to my untutored eye, the chassis looks plausible:

Given some actual details about the product (I should point out that while I do live in Japan, I do not know everything about every single anime/manga or whatever), it proves simple enough to do a little searching and dig up e.g. this blog post which indicates a Tomytec chassis can be used. Post is part of a series, prior/next links at the bottom of the article.

That's fantastic, and it does suggest that if I use a flat Greenmax chassis I can keep the internal details.

This very useful link http://trainweb.org/tomix/chassis_dim.htm has previously been posted on the NGF. Covers most of the Japanese chassis.

With thanks to the original posters.

There is a complete base available for the bath house and the town along with all the buildings, but probably best made as an original item.

I have a book of the concept drawings and they show elements not in the final cartoon such as a freight train that delivers coal to the bath house, so lots of potential.
