Pendolino Traction Tyres
« on: February 28, 2020, 05:51:10 PM »
Hi,

One of my Pendolinos has lost all of its tyres and now struggles on curves and gradients. I want to put new tyres on but can't figure out how to get the bogies off the chassis or the wheels off the bogies.

I've searched the forum and people say things like "I pinged the wheelset out and changed the tyres", which seems to me to be impossible as the axles are surrounded by the bogies.

So can anyone provide a step by step guide, in words of one syllable, and preferably with pictures, of how to replace the traction tyres on this model.

Thanks,

John P

Hello John,

If you email Rapido’s repair agent using the address in the manual he will be happy to talk you through the process.  He also has spare tyres if you need them.

From memory though the bogies can be easily popped out, then the lower plate removed to allow the axles to drop out.

Cheers

Ben A.

Thanks Ben.

I decided to bite the bullet and have a go this afternoon.

I took a look at the exploded parts diagram and realised that the bottom of the bogie just clips on to the main bogie tower. Using a scalpel blade I carefully levered the bottom of the bogie away

and ended up with this.

Then the wheelsets just drop out.

The hardest part was fitting the tyres.

As I am completely inept when it comes to anything mechanical, I had fitted 4 tyres and broken a fifth before I realised that using my tweezers to force the tyre open and around the wheel was the way to do it, rather than try to hold the tire and the wheel between my finger and thumb and then use the tweezers to try to force the tyre around the wheel rim  :-[

Like this

In my world DCC and electrickery is easy peasy, but this kind of stuff has my brain exploding  :veryangry:

Anyhow Penny is now working fine again, and I have now learned how to do this, so when my other Pendolinos have similar issues I know how to fix them.

I will have to buy more tyres though.

Regards,

John P
