Sadly the timings don't really work, I can't get up to London early enough or home afterward, and two nights in hotels makes it rather more expensive!

the unusual :

the diesel fans, the modern scene ...

7 march :

DBS Class 66 Swindon (pu) - Kemble (pu) - Stroud (pu) - Cheltenham Spa (pu) - Bromsgrove (pu) - Birmingham New Street (pu) - Stafford (pu) - Crewe
DB Cargo Class 66 and Freightliner Class 66 tnt Crewe - Stockport - Salford - Crewe
DBS Class 66 Crewe - stafford (sd) - Birmingham New Street (sd) - Bromsgrove (sd) - Cheltenham Spa (sd) - Stroud (sd) - Kemble (sd) - Swindon

https://www.pathfindertours.co.uk/events/the-hacienda/

With a nod to the cult 1980/1990s Manchester Night Club ‘The Hacienda‘ we are pleased to announce Ian Loveday’s latest railtour project, which will visit a good selection of rail terminals and freight lines, mostly in and around Manchester.

This excursion initially heads  north, DB Cargo class 66 hauled, via the pick up stations below and, once north of Birmingham, we start to roam off the passenger network through loops before heading into the depths of Crewe Yard, where there will be loco spotting opportunities aplenty. Whilst in the Crewe area we will pick up a Freightliner class 66 , providing a very rare haulage opportunity.

With our train of mark I carriages then in top’n’tail mode we continue to weave between the passenger and freight networks as we visit a number of terminals that serve the waste and aggregate industries. We expect that some tracks we travel over on this trip will not have seen a passenger train before, or indeed, may never do so again!

After what we hope will have been a fantastic day’s railtouring it will be time to think about heading homewards, but not before squeezing in a few more unusual routings along the way.

Subject to operational circumstances on the day, the validated route from Network Rail is:

As per Pick-Up stations to Birmingham New Street, then via Bescot Up & Down Goods – Bushbury Junction Down Goods Loop – Stafford –  Crewe Down Independent Lines – Gresty Lane Curve – Gresty Green Siding Up Loop (Reverse) – Down Manchester Independent Line – Wilmslow – Stockport Down Goods – Longsight Down Goods Loop  – Mayfield Down Goods Loop – Manchester Piccadilly – Deansgate – Ordsall Chord – Manchester Victoria – Deans Lane Waste Terminal (Reverse) – Manchester Victoria – Brindle Heath Loop – Pendleton Waste Terminal (Reverse) –  Brindle Heath Loop (Reverse) – Bolton (Revrse) – Salford Central – Manchester Victoria – Brewery Junction (Reverse) – Collyhurst Depot (Reverse) – Brewery Junction (Reverse) – Manchester Victoria – Salford Hope Street Terminal (Reverse) – Manchester Victoria  – Philips Park West to South Junctions – Ashburys  – Guide Bridge Up & Down Passenger Loop (Reverse) – Avenue Sidings (Reverse) – Guide Bridge – Heaton Norris Up Goods Loop – Stockport – Wilmslow – Sandbach – Crewe Down Refuge Siding (Reverse) – Crewe (Reverse) – Stafford – As per Set-Down Stations.

We are indebted to Suez, GB Railfreight, Cemex and Freightliner for their kind support of this special charter train.

DRS Class 57 x 2 Birmingham New Street - Birmingham International (sd) - Coventry (sd) - Leamington Spa (sd) - Banbury (sd) - Didcot Parkway (sd) - Reading West (sd) - Basingstoke (sd) - Eastleigh

The previous two DRS loco railtours proved popular and requests for another are regularly received. Therefore, for 2020, we present ‘The Blue Boys Merrymixer’.

The day starts with a powerful class 68 working the mark I carriaged train north from Hampshire to the Birmingham area via the pick-up stations below. Then a brace of class 37s start a ramble of midlands lines ending at Crewe (not Stoke-on-Trent) for an afternoon break. Expect to travel via the Burton – Leicester freight route via Coalville and over the North Chord at Nuneaton, (via Lichfield City not available).

On leaving Crewe a class 66 heads south through the west midlands to Daventry via Shrewsbury, Bescot and Rugby, with a number of freight loops traversed (Gresty Green Up Loop, Shrewsbury Crewe Bank, Cosford Up Goods Loop, Oxley Up Goods Loop).

The next loco will be a class 88 electro-diesel, ‘sparking’ the train to Birmingham International via Rugby before class 57s take back over for the homeward set down run to Eastleigh.
