He's talking about a big red Guy Arab IV, stairs and boarding platform at the back, half cab for the driver. Red Rose emblem and LUT on it somewhere.
Scroll down on this link and you'll find a number 38 with Westhoughton as its destination, although I remember the 38 going all the way from Manchester to Wigan, and as a bonus the Manchester Terminus was under the railway arches of the defunct Exchange station (so strictly speaking Salford).

They didn't get much further north than Bolton, so up in Preston you wouldn't have seen them, it was all Ribble up there wasn't it?

I would have no clue, John, as I only 'blew in' to th'area in 2007.
Maybe this is the closest match which could be 'doctored' to the correct markings?

Sorry, but I reckon you're really going to struggle sourcing that unless you know someone who could do you a one off 3D print.

would agree with mick. to my untrained eye on buses that looks like a modified routemaster, but hope you succeed in finding the bus !!!!
