Electra Vinyls for a class 170?
« on: January 01, 2019, 08:22:25 PM »
Guys,

I've got one of these .............

It's a solid little thing and runs well enough (since my mate @ntpntpntp fished some crud out of its gears) and its been converted to run DCC. I can forgive it for having no lights but its livery doesn't really fit in with my layout. Never mind thought I, I'll buy some new London Midland body shells for it. Can't find any and Bachmann can't help me either. No way I'm skilled enough to repaint it, so my thoughts turned to Electra Vinyls.

Does anyone have any experience on the difficulty of fitting these? I've seen a few images on Google where people seem to have done good jobs on carriage sides but the 170 is very curvy around the cab side and front and I can't see how a vinyl could possibly take up the correct shape. Any comments welcome.

Alec.

I know judicious use of a hot-air gun can help. Though I suspect the cab front may still require painting before application of the vinyls.
“We are indebted to those soldiers who served with courage and distinction to bring peace to Northern Ireland,” UK Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson said. “The welfare of our former service personnel is of the utmost importance.”

Hi Alec

My 170 graphics come with a shaped frond end vinyl that covers everything except the bit over the cab roof dome (a little fill in painting is needed). Drop me a mail if you have any questions and I can send a screenshot if you want.

BR Lines have London Midland 170 bodyshells in, part number 371-432, you’d need two matching ones I’d guess, so they’ll have the same coach number. £45 for a pair though, vinyls would certainly be cheaper!

Should be able to sell the resulting spare bodies for about the same money
After any fees the cost would be about the same

Or buy a LM one (there’s one on eBay but it’s overpriced), do a body swap and sell the SWT one on the non-DCC fitted chassis.

Yes, seen this one but as you say its way overpriced. Swapping the bodies would have been exactly what I'd have done.

I did this:

from this:

using vinyls. Admittedly, maybe I should have done a little bit of preparatory paintwork here and there but I was only trying them out (cheap 2nd hand off Ebay) to see what they looked like.

Very impressed. Very easy.

Thanks Vigo. Looks like you've done a good job. Any chance you could do a head on shot?

Alec.
