Class 121 'Chiltern' from DCC / Dapol
« on: December 29, 2018, 08:16:32 PM »
Was given the limited edition class 121 in Chiltern livery (limited edition) for Christmas. Supplies by DCC supplies but made by Dapol.

Nice model that runs well with the pre-fitted chip. Good lights etc.

Do like the ease of access to the chips etc. via the roof.. makes for ease of tweaking.

Presumably it means that the head and tail lamps operate in the appropriate direction. However the real unit didn't have an illuminated headcode so neither does the model.

My recently obtained green Chiltern bubble car doesnít have headcode lights.
I bought the non DCC fittedone and fitted a Zimo Next 18 4 function decoder.
To get the number 2  end lights working I did need to remap the functions but was easy to do using JMRI.

I have now painted the buffer shanks silver and red plus weathered the wheels.already looks a lot better

All 121s have exhaust pipes. I think you have a duff one Bob - or the 121 has evolved into a battery electric!

Bob G  Iíve Just been looking on the internet because , a chap called Ian Blundel has told me that the Blue Chiltern Railways one was modified and the exhausts come up through the guards compartment and then through the roof I have seen loads of photos , but I canít find a really good roof shot to risk fitting the tiny bit of pipe sticking out and Iíve been looking all day . I think itís now on the Bodmin Railway so they might be able to send me a good roof photo if I ask nicely .
Obviously it wasnít viable for Dapol to re tool the roof just for the only Bubble Car like that which is fair enough .They have fitted the two marker lights and the Center high intensity headlight though and I will be running it in at the club running day tomorrow.

class 121  55020 is indeed at bodmin

see :

http://www.hondawanderer.com/55020_55034_Princes_Risborough_2017.html

look back 16 years ago, 2003, Chiltern Railways reintroduced "Heritage" diesel multiple units on its Aylesbury to Princes Risborough shuttle service. For this purpose, unit 121020 was purchased from Network Rail, and heavily refurbished to allow it to operate passenger services. It was repainted into Chiltern Railways blue livery.  The external exhaust pipes were rerouted through the brake van area. look for 7 july 2003 photo. https://www.railcar.co.uk/images/11395

I took my Chiltern Bubble Car to the Berkshire N Gauge Group club running day ,they are a really nice bunch of guys  and  allways make me wellcome as a guest ,a member called Darren fitted my light bar for me he said you have to cut about 4 mm of the end because of the socket for the chip . Snowwolflair checked the speed of it and we managed to get it running at a very nice 50mph , it obviously went even slower but we were experimenting to get the right running speed for the branch line on my layout , once it was run in we did a stupid top speed run and it was clocked at an amazing 260 mph .I allso ran my Canadian passenger train it did look good and ran well as it hadnít been out f the box for at least two years . Thanks must allso go to Hailstone who very kindly picks me up and brings me home as I havenít got a car now..
All in a a very nice afternoon .
