up down slow line joining mainline signal
« on: December 18, 2018, 06:15:49 PM »
hi everyone

where an up down slow line ends and joins the main line what type of signal would be most usual?

the options are straight (into a head shunt, rarely used manoeuvre but could be used to then reverse into a siding that comes off the uds) or on to the down main, or all the way over a crossover and on to the up main (running wrong road).

region is br western in 1980s and I've not decided on semaphore or colour light yet so just want to know what signal it would be!

hope my explanation makes sense!

Cheers

Tim

For colour light signals, I would expect both the adjacent line and the bi-directional line to have the same signal type and most likely three or four aspect
The bi-directional signal would most likely have a right feather and call-on
The right feather would allow crossing to the opposite route
The call-on would allow continuation to the head shunt

If semaphore, would be a stop signal (red arm).  It might have a distant signal (yellow arm) underneath if the next signal box was quite close.

If colour light it would be a two, three or four aspect according to the signals on the main line, with a position light possibly offset to one side for moves into the headshunt.  It would also have a route indicator illuminated for any move onto the main line, so for any move where the signal shows a main aspect - for reason please google the Foxhall Junction accident of 1968.

MJKERR has posted the same thing in slightly different words.

thanks both!  good knowledge!

so 3 aspect with right feather and a subsidiary. would i need a feather in 2 positions i.e. to show onto the down or up main, or just one feather to illuminate for both options?

for a semaphore signal would i need a shunt signal or disc for control to the headshunt, and would there need to be anything to indicate the route set?

cheers for your help

There would be a single right hand feather (right hand track)
When signalled on to the main route (left hand track) the feather would remain unlit
