Oxford Diecast 2019 – deliveries and announcements
« on: December 10, 2018, 08:31:18 AM »
With the final Oxford deliveries to retailers just about over for 2018, I thought I would start a new topic for the 2019 period. 2018 was the 25th anniversary of the founding of Oxford Diecast although the N range is only about 11 years old. Predictably the special 25th anniversary model – a 1/43 scale coach – missed being delivered in the year. The late delivery of the N Christmas Coca Cola model is a disappointment too (NTCAB007CC).

At the end of 2017 Eloise Davies took over as MD of Oxford Diecast when her father (Lyndon Davies) took over as CEO at Hornby Hobbies.  The resources at Oxford have been spread quite thinly in 2018 although the level of releases has continued unabated at around 25 models per month across many scales. A greater proportion of manufacturing has been devoted to reissuing popular models and in 1/76 scale, and there have been some quality control problems, especially one which affected a large proportion of a new JCB licensed truck.

32 new N items were announced in 2018, and 35 items were released.

The list of announced but not yet delivered N scale items is below.  This time last year there were 3 more models on the waiting list than now.

N105008           Ford Anglia - Yellow (Vyv)
NCA021            Bedford CA Ice Cream Van - Mr Softee
NDIS001            Land Rover Discovery 4 - Ipanema Sand*
NFT021              Ford Transit Mk5 - Stobart Fleet Maintenance January 2019
NFT023             Ford Transit Mk5 SWB Low Roof - Network Rail
NGG001             Green Goddess - AFS *
NLRT004            Leyland Royal Tiger - Maidstone & District
NMB007             Mercedes Actros Curtainside - McGawn Bros
NMGB003         MGB Roadster - British Racing Green
NMMT008         Morris Traveller - Almond Green (Dot Cotton)
NMN008            Mini - Surf Blue/Old English White
NMW6001          Bristol MW6G - Royal Blue *
NNMN005          New Mini - British Racing Green and Union Jack  January 2019
NNR006             New Routemaster - LT50 General    January 2019
NNR007             New Routemaster - First West Yorkshire
NRT007            RT Bus - Browns Blue
NSDF001           Shelvoke & Drewry Freightlifter - British Rail (Western) *
NSHL01TK       Scania Highline Tanker - BP
NTCAB006       Scania T Cab Semi Low Loader - Sandy Kydd
NTCAB007CC    Scania T Cab Box Trailer - Coca Cola Xmas
NTR008              Tram - London Transport
NVWB005        VW Beetle - Black
NWFA002         Weymann Fanfare - Grey Cars

* = first release of new tooling

Delivered items marked in red

I will try to keep this list up to date as items are released in 2019.

The newly tooled items were announced in January (2) and June (2) but I have seen no evidence of pre-production models. Hopefully these will emerge at the London Toyfair around 22 January 2019. The next planned announcements will be made at that time.

The gaps in the range continue to exist for all sorts of periods for cars and light vans, medium weight trucks, some useful but unusual bodies like livestock carriers, refuse collection vehicles, and just about anything you can think of. Even with upwards of 350 vehicles already available the range is never going to satisfy every wish. Oxford’s method of tooling for the N items is to include 4, 6 or even 8 items in the same tool, which is designed to allow any one of the items to be run separately. The downside is that if just one model needs extra work at the tool design and cutting stage then the whole suite of models is delayed. The tool cannot be finalised for production until all the items are at production standard.

Surprisingly, apart from the Ford Cortina Mk3, the most recently tooled cars like the Hillman Imp and the Jaguar XF have not seen recolours announced. New liveries continue to be announced in the bus and coach range, and my favourite New Routemaster bus continues to carry new colours.

The current range appears here with many of the newer announcements near the top of the page:-

The current all scales catalogue can be found here:-

https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1017/3257/files/OCT-JAN_19.pdf?15357187787527904344

It is worth noting that this is not a comprehensive listing, and that the number of items listed is limited by the 48 page format.

New deliveries are announced in the monthly Globe magazine which appears online here with a link from the bottom of the Oxford diecast website homepage, shortly after the hard copies have been sent out to members of the Oxford Collectors Club.

The November 2018 edition is here:-

As before I would like to mention that I have no formal relationship with Oxford Diecast other than as a customer, and as a source of information to them for new models I would like to see made. I do try to keep abreast of what is happening at Oxford Diecast, and report it here. Sometimes my travelling schedule means I am a bit later than some other parts of the internet with updates.

Thanks Mike for that detailed account of the current state of play.

I had a sneaking suspicion that my Hattons advanced order for the Christmas Coca Cola Scania T Cab would be unfulfilled for this year.  :(. Oh well, that’s Christmas for you: full of pleasures, and disappointments. :D

 :beers:

Three current era new items are due at retailers over the coming few days:-

NFT021           Ford Transit Mk5 - Stobart Fleet Maintenance
NNMN005       New Mini - British Racing Green and Union Jack
NNR006          New Routemaster - LT50 General

Oxford's plans for new items for late 2019/early 2020 will be announced around the time of the London Toyfair which begins on 22 January 2019. Hopefully there will be some signs of progress on the 4 new castings announced in 2018.

I was a bit surprised to read that amongst this month's deliveries are 11 previously released out-of-stock items where a further batch has been manufactured, made up of 6 buses, 2 farm tractors and 3 agricultural trailers/implements.

The next new item announcements for late 2019/early 2020 delivery will be at around 7pm on Monday 21 January 2019 on the Oxford diecast Collectors facebook Group. This is the day before the London Toy Fair begins.
