Desert Island Trains
« on: November 21, 2018, 02:09:36 PM »
You have been shipwrecked on an uncharted, undiscovered and uninhabited island. Fortunately, there is a railway track running around the island with one station and one train. So what train (any country, any era) is it to be and why?

Mine would be an Intercity 125 in the original blue/white livery, as the aesthetics of the train by designer Kenneth Grange perfectly match the graphic livery. It would be well suited for looking at and riding on while I wait for rescue. There would be a dining car of course with an endless supply of British Rail ham and cheese sandwiches on which I could survive!

Okay, so who’s humming this already:

I’d choose a Swiss Glacier Express, complete with stocked restaurant car, panoramic windows in 1st Class passenger cars, and full air conditioning:

Are we riding this hypothetical train, or is it a model to play with?

If it's just "what's your favourite that you'd want to watch go past for the rest of eternity" then I'd probably say a class 92 on a suitable rake of container wagons. If you have to/can ride it then I'd say an Amtrak Genesis (phase V livery) with a full set of Superliner coaches.

Ha ha yes I'm humming away. I see you have gone one up on me on the catering side of things, interesting! Good choice of train though.

Good question - it's the real thing as opposed to the model.

Has to be an Adams Radial tank (the most beautiful of the Victorian designs IMHO) pulling a couple of dilapated non-corridor coaches. Nostalgiaville!

In which case I'd probably go for the passenger train, may as well get a tour of the island on demand!

I'll go for a Rheingold with a Pacific up front. Perferably some BR 18 (be it an correct 18.5( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bavarian_S_3/6 ) or the cute BR 18.1 (die schöne Württembergerin:
 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/W%C3%BCrttemberg_C )).

The Royal Train, fully staffed. That'll save the need to waste time knocking up an inadequate shelter - I'll just slum it and live on the train. :D
“We are indebted to those soldiers who served with courage and distinction to bring peace to Northern Ireland,” UK Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson said. “The welfare of our former service personnel is of the utmost importance.”

Was about to go in that direction as well, but then choose the Rheingold

What's that mental Japanese luxury train, maybe that'd do...

The Shiki Shima, that'd do:
