Received mine last Friday and, although I've not sat for a serious read, first impressions are of some excellent photos (especially of the driving cab layouts) and fascinating history. Well worth the dosh IMHO.

If you want to view the magazine before you buy you can view it here

https://psv4.userapi.com/c848132/u510634745/docs/d12/3f46d4107268/Modern_Locomotives_Illustrated__November_2018.pdf

I get a 404 error when I click on the link.

I've just tried it again and it works ok for me. I'm using Microsoft Edge and windows 10.  It also works in Firefox

Try right clicking on the link, 'Save target as' and saving a PDF

You should then be able to open the pdf on your computer rather than reading online

A lovely book and a refreshing change from some of the very duff books being sold at this time - who thinks an "A5" book makes a picture album  with hald page pics notmuch better than a thumbnail image would do well to learn!

Great pics and "D1077 Western Brilliant" springs to mind !

I've got to look out for this.

Local newsagent is good with railway mags from England and Europe. Looking forward to it.

Thanks for the heads-up!

There's also a special issue album from Irwell Books on the same topic out right now!

https://www.irwellpress.com/acatalog/BOOKAZINE.html

Of the two, the one I bought was "Hydraulic Legends" because it has a lot more text. It's a genuinely good read, with several pages of text on each class. Plus, it discusses industrials and even DMUs, not just the mainline classes. So for anyone who thinks diesel hydraulics vanished from the network in 1977 with the last of the 'Westerns', there's a healthy correction here, with a reminder that most of the high performance DMUs are diesel-hydraulics, including the much loved 'Sprinters'.

The Irwell Books bookazine is a more traditional album of mostly black and white photos, with brief captions and little analysis.

Cheers, NeMo
