Good afternoon all

You may of already seen elsewhere that I am now the proud owner of Airesby Colliery, a fascinating ex exhibition layout recreating the atmosphere of the Aire Valley Merry-go-Round coal operations of the BR Railfreight Coal sector and early privatisation eras. It also features a functioning rapid loader to load coal trains. This has been cleverly designed to hand load the wagons via a scratch built shoot affixed behind the rapid loader.

I purchased this once popular exhibition layout back in August after seeing it for sale eBay. It was not to be sniffed at, especially at the set buy it now price! The seller, a member of the Bingham MRC was simply selling due to starting another project and needed the room in his garage. I just couldn't resist! Having a passion for all things MGR and especially all the classes associated with MGR workings, for me the Midlands and North West early 90's. Classes 20, 56, 58 and 60 with rakes of HAA and HEA hoppers in tow will soon again be seen rattling around Airesby Colliery.

The layout does need a little TLC in places. The main part being the back scene, which has a few tears and creases in it, so this will be replaced / reworked. Other minor jobs include a damn good hoovering, and reworking / tidying up the scenics in places. Yesterday I managed to set the layout up and give it a thorough testing with my class 58 and 11 MGR hoppers. Why only 11 MGR hoppers you say? Well being a small, compact layout, compromises had to be given on the length of rakes. You are limited to 11 MGR hoppers plus loco, but I feel this still captures the feel and atmosphere. Airesby is an approximate representation of operating practices and you still get that big colliery and MGR feel.

Overview:

- 6ft x 3ft

- Wired for DCC operation (Power provided by NCE Powercab)

- Era modelled - Early 1990's

- Features a working coal loader, manually operated from behind

- 5-road traverser

- Splits into 4 boards

- 4 Turnouts operated by SEEP point motors

The layout is made up from 4 boards:

- Main scenic board is a single board 6ft x 1ft

- Traverser Fiddleyard is 4ft x 1ft

- Two curve boards are 2ft x 1ft

The track is a continuous single track oval with a 5-road traverser fiddleyard at the back. The scenic track is code 55 Peco and code 80 behind the scenes.

The Scenic section at the front has:

- A passing loop with a Dapol easi-shunt magnet embedded to allow run-around manoeuvres following coal loading

- A siding running to the rapid loader

- A short siding for - Loco stabling point

Once all the minor work is complete, I plan on returning Airesby Colliery to the exhibition circuit, hopefully sometime in late 2019.

I even managed a YouTube video :confused1: https://youtu.be/PKt8eaoYYKs

Cheers

Here's a photo that may jog some memories, if you have seen Airesby at past exhibitions...

The first and only time for me was Stafford in 2015 and I was blown away. I spent quite a bit of time viewing as well as nattering to then builder / owner. I was hooked.

I've seen that layout in the flesh at the 2015 Stafford Show and am glad it's gone into safe hands.
