Welcome to the forum Mark. When you are ready, ask your questions - somebody will have an answer, (or two).

Welcome mark j. Maybe worth a read of : ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?topic=35556.msg/416493#msg416493. Search A beginners guide to model railways written by mick  newport nob by. Please do ask questions. Plenty of friendly  experienced talented modellers

MarkJ Welcome, from one new railroader to another. I don't know if you flailed about trying to get to Crewearpley40's excellent recommendation but I sure struggled! Yet like a terrier with a bone (or, actually, a reference librarian with a juicy stumper) I've located it by using https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?topic=35556 and, yes, Newportnoby and the other contributors have a lot to offer.

Heck! Just after posting this initially, I was rambling about in the different tab headers and under NGF links (3 over from the Home tab), voilà! Halfway down, a dedicated link to the Beginner's Guide. Can't wait to explore what more is in the forum. Still, wouldn't have found it without Crewearpley40's mentioning it so thanks to him for the lead.

Thanks for all the welcomes people, much appreciated.
I have discovered there is an almost overwhelming amount of information and choices, however, I have to start somewhere.
I have been playing with SCARM and have attempted a basic layout using settrack, Its a basic loop with a double straight at the front where I would like a platform, and a spur off the back leading into the centre for storage of trains. I have made mistakes no doubt and a more experienced person would probably take one look, shake their head and mutter "noobs".
I am leaning away from starter sets at the moment and maybe assembling the components seperately.

Thanks again folks for the welcomes.
Mark

Hi MarkJ @MarkJ
Welcome!

SCARM is a great start. You can export you diagram to PDF, then could attach to a post if you want some feedback. Even start a new thread under “Layout planning” sub heading...
