Welcome aboard Greg.
Good to see another member from the South West.
Can I ask what area and era you might be thinking of modelling?
If it looks right then it most probably is right.

Hi Greg, and welcome to the forum
Have a read of this which may help you avoid some of the more basic pitfalls I ran into early in my N gauge history...........

:hellosign: Spotted the forum whilst searching for answers to the latest hiccup in my quest to build a N gauge layout, a quest started over 10 years ago and is nowhere near completion despite having much more time on my hands over the past couple of years. Most of this time has been spent sorting out problems with equipment failing, So I am hoping to benefit from the expertise of the members in order to avoid more costly mistakes, will also try to contribute from a duffers point of veiw :dunce:

Can you tell us more, such as space available, DC/DCC, era, location etc?

:thankyousign: Thanks for all the welcome messages from members, I am sure I will get used to using the forum and hopefully make a few friendships along the way  :) in answer to the request for more information about my modelling, I can say that I am trying to build a modern day era layout, and failing miserably, I have had many rethinks over the past years and am determined to stick to the goals I set when starting out, mainly to be a totally realistic setting, able to run full size trains with interesting operation, I hail from Coventry and have part of a room available with an area of 3.5m x 2.2m in which to model. I currently have a preference for DC working but could possibly be swayed to DCC in the future, No doubt there has been some discussions on the pros and cons of each system.

My original idea was to model a mainline station with multiple platforms and a variety of train companies using it. Loosely based on Birmingham New Street West Coast main line track layout and the approaches from the south (not the Station structure), This I know is quite a task and has been a challenge thus far.  I am beginning to find out how difficult it is given the resources available as the prototype is ever changing So I am thinking of changing up to a more futuristic fictitious  theme, hoping that by the time I complete the build it will be current era.

will need space

what with tyseley / edgbaston / gloucester trains from the south west, derby to the east, sutton / bescot lines, proof house junction. jim smith modelled new street p4, i would personally aim for the international station. good luck
