 :hellosign:

This is my first ever contribution to a forum.  I Have read the terms and code of conduct and am glad to see the way you protect members.

I have joined to get help. I have just bought a Dapol Hall class locomotive with tender drive. the tender an locomotive keep derailing on bends that a Graham Farrish 2-6-4 tank engine copes with most of the time. It took me several rebuilds to get the tank to go round but it is relible now.

My track laying skills are poor as I have almost no experience.

I suspect the cause of my current problems is uneaven track, curves to tight, irregular slopes.

I want to rule out the quality of the new locomotive.

Any Ideas?

Hi John and welcome to the forum. What make of track are you using? I use Kato Unitrack, but one thing I can suggest as to checking for uneven track , is to run your finger over the rails, you will feel any poor joins, (if you do not rip your finger open in the process  ;)). Plenty of members will be along to give some guidance. Good luck with the problem.
David.

Welcome John.
As for track ensure that each section is properly fixed to its neighbour and pushed fully together.
If you can tell us what type of track you are using, we can help further Iím sure.

Make sure the fishplates (the rail joiners) fully engage. As David says, running your finger along the track too will identify this. If there is a bump then the joiner isnít engaged properly.

Good luck
Martin

Hi John, what I am about to say will get the backs up of some people, but Dapol Steam engines are known to have running problems even from new. Sometimes it can be down to a slight loosening or tightening of pony trucks. Sometimes a good example from Dapol can be found it is just bad luck to the many that do have the problems.

I think there's more than an element of truth in Dapol locos being worse on poor track than Farish, which seem to be more 'forgiving'. Some questions please........
What track system are you using - Peco, Kato?
Is the track brand new?
What is the smallest radius curve you have?

If you'd be happy to pay postage both ways I'm sure someone will run it on their track to see if it's OK. It's something I've done for someone before now.

Wonderful to have so much constructive help.

I am using a mixture of Peco Setrack and Flexi.  I have a spiral cobbled together with wooden railway track as the baseboard and reinforced joints between pieces. their radius and length is almost the same as the No. 1 radius track I used on the spiral.  I spent a lot of time adjusting the height of the nut and bolt pillar supports. The wooden track is 1cm thick and quite stiff but I don't think the joints are rigid enough.

I used Flexi track on the Viaduct but did not know about the overlaping method of joining it so I got bendy joints.

I think a rebuild is going to be needed, probably buy a commercial one.

My other difficulty is limited access as the whole setup is in a wardrobe and too big and heavy to lift in and out.

Have to go and be Grandad now

Most Dapol traction will have problems on 1st radius curves, I think even the paperwork suggests min of r2 or even r3

Solid piece of information.

Confirms my thoughts on doing a rebuild on the relevant sections.
