Simple Hack - Older design NER/NCB Brake Van
« on: May 17, 2018, 02:50:41 PM »
Looking around for prototype NCB brake vans, I came across this example of an old NER van, modified in NCB service, and subsequently restored for public display. Sadly, Monkwearmouth Station Museum seems to have closed last year and I've not been able to discover what's going to happen to the van.

Earlier NE brake vans were wooden built, and this example's end stanchions and wooden side-lookouts reflected those designs. Triang Hornby's R16 Goods Brake Van represented one of these.

The Peco Brake Van body represents the later NER design, but is easily retrograded.  I have modelled the NCB configuration, with side lookout removed and planked over, using scored 10thou plasticard, but the same approach could be used over the Peco lookouts for NER/BR service. A higher pitched roof was stolen from a standard van and stanchions fashioned from 1mm square plasticard. The couplings were filed to avoid fouling the stanchions in use.

Here's the finished van next to a more-or-less standard NER example:

Another cheap and cheerful project to diversify the collection!

Hi Steve - the red van has Railtec transfers, and the dark grey one some old 2mm white alphabet - now yellowed with age! The tare weight was from the Railtec sheet - yellowed with some Citadel sepia wash.
