I find that the advantage DG's have is their general ability to couple/un-couple on curved track down to quite a tight radius. With many others it seems they only like either dead straight track or just a gentle curve.

They are not I find all that easy to assemble - I mostly just make up a few at a time - but are fairly easy to 'adapt' to fit whatever they are being used with.

Sorry if this is a thread hijack,

But has anyone any advice on cutting the plate on the DG coupling to fit into a narrower space in the wagon's chassis?

So, just a file, file cleaning brush, time and whiskey then?

This is something I need to experiment with too, any advice fitting the d&g's to a gf Jinty or 4mt tank loco's, frightened of making a mess of them. I have just bought one of those little anvils I saw on someones post, that should come in handy for working on the couplings. I have attached it to a piece of ply to give it more stability....pic attached.

I generally alter DG's using needle files or bend them with small snipe nosed pliars while I usually hold them when needed with a small hand-held vice since they are themselves quite small. It's jaws are just 15mm wide. It was made by my Father-in-law when he did his toolmakers training back when......and he kindly gave it to me at least 30 years ago.... (how time passes!). It's probably among one of my most used tools and I think I would be lost without it at times. Similar types are available today if you search around.

Thanks Izzy, I do have a small desk mounted vice which is handy and a set of files.

I've got a hand vice now and this seems to allow me to cut the required bits off the etch to fit them in an NEM pocket

Thanks
