Northport - 1990's North west
« on: February 14, 2012, 12:02:27 AM »
Inspiration came from Blackpool North and Southport in the early to mid 90s when Class 31,4's and 37,4's could be commonly seen on loco hauled service trains to the seaside. These were named Club Trains to and from Manchester Victoria. But not always a 314xx or 374xx as sometimes the odd no heat loco was called upon  With the loco hauled trains also comes 1st and 2nd generation DMU's these mainly being 101, 108, 142, 150, 153, 156 & 158. All which are available RTR (except the 142) Hurry up Dapol ;)

Layout will be 10' scenic section with a 3' apx fiddle yard. Reasonable size station and platforms to cater for the loco hauled rakes and DMU's. Centre road for loco stabling, carriage sidings and carriage wash being a big feature. Here are a few photos of my progress so far. Track is not pinned down yet as I am planning it all out, but after today i have the final plan. But could change slightly as the track is being laid :smiley-laughing:

Sounds like a great layout that you have planned here, I am a big fan of the Regie Rail era.
Although there is no facility to run around in Blackpool North station (none of the platforms have point work in them at the buffer ends) occasional services did an engine swap in the platform with another loco coupling onto the departure end after the leading loco had uncoupled at the buffer end. I remember doing brake tests on a few when I was a guard before working back out to Liverpool or Manchester with them. As you mentioned the majority of services propelled to and from the carriage sidings to run around the stock.
We used to work the Club trains with class 31s to Liverpool and Manchester Piccadilly, and class 37s on services to Manchester Victoria. On a Saturday the 37 and stock would work a return service from Blackpool North to Holyhead.

The layout idea and operating interest sounds great.
At Blackpool we do have a fueling point that in addition to fueling units was also used to fuel the locos off the Club Trains when they used to run. A bit of licence is required though with regards to the fuel being delivered by TTA's though as believe it or not all the fuel comes in by road tanker and has done at least since the Regional Railways era. If you need any photos of the fueling point/carriage wash or the sidings/station at Blackpool to help with your layout let me know and I will take them for you as my current position allows me access to all areas.
Good luck with the project and keep the updates coming.

hi,

nice layout! plenty of regional railways on display!!!

have you thought about using magnets for uncoupling the loco from coaches so that another loco can then come and take the train out? maybe use dapols new system?

cheers
