Arbel Car Carrier - EtchedPixels
« on: April 05, 2018, 11:21:37 PM »
@EtchedPixels

My thanks to EtchedPixels for arranging this kit last year.  It is a very nice 3D print and it goes together well with brass etches for end details.

The only thing to bear in mind is preparing the surface to get a smooth finish, which just takes time, paint coats, and a fine abrasive.

It will be running at our show on Saturday (Gratuitous Plug) http://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?topic=40638.msg494705#msg494705

Fantastic work. These look wonderful.

I have been aware of these kits for some time, but never really got round to getting in touch with Alan regarding purchasing a set or 3. Are these readily available? Or special order? I used to have 2 sets of CJM Arbels, but I sold them on as my modelling interests changed (now deeply regretting it 7 years on)

What colour is the blue? Is this readily available? Or a case of mixing your own.

Cheers
Anthony

I got two kits Alan put together for me as he was about to move house but I am sure he will go back into production soon.  The brass etches make all the difference.

The blue is mixed and is hard to get correct as it changes with light from blue to a blue/green.  Best advice is mix and paint a test which should be viewed in daylight (not sunlight).

These do look good, lot of patience applied.   I’m still wary of 3D prints given my struggles to get a smooth finish.

Wonder if we could persuade someone to run off a resin print for Etched Pixels.

Best regards

Iain

The trick is to use gloss Humbrol enamel paint.  Many coats and lots of drying time with wet and dry rub downs.  The paint acts as a filler and fortunately these models have no surface detail to worry about.  Then a coat of Humbrol enamel satin varnish.

Normally, yes but too thick for this project.

I disagree personally, as you say there’s no surface detail, seemed spot on to me. YMMV. They’re a very nice kit, the bogie assembly is really neat.
