Fact no.1:

Baseball was invented by the English, combining Rounders and Cricket.

Fact no. 2:

Baseball was played extensively in England from around 1890.

(Where did Derby County play football for over 100 years until 1997? - yup, the Baseball Ground)

I salute your knowledge… here's to you Joe Di Maggio...… ;D.

Perhaps my disdain for the game comes from seeing the ludicrous
" Field of Dreams"  with Kevin Costner or the Babe Ruth movie
with John Goodman.

PS, inappropriately named football grounds include Kilmarnock's
Rugby Park.

Field of Dreams was a great movie, but wasn't a great Baseball movie. If you want to get a better insight into baseball try Moneyball with Brad Pitt.

Sports movies are notoriously difficult to make and sell at the box office,
unless they feature major star. Boxing films probably easiest to make as
they show fist fights which appear in war films, gangster films, westerns etc…….
Movie stars not always the most athletic   (Escape to Victory). Chariots of
Fire was pretty good, people running !

Moneyball grossed $110million and was nominated for 6 Academy awards.

It's well worth a watch regardless of the baseball element.

Hi all,

Well after my English 'soccer' team mucked up on Thursday and the Giants seemed to be spiralling into oblivion I was starting to lose all Sport hope but 2 wins in Arizona made a nice start and end to Sunday (UK).

Kung Fu Panda tastic mate.

Bit of mojo back . We're only joint bottom now  :D.

Cheers weave  :beers:

Hi all,

@weave I watched some of that game, the Panda made some good plays, he's quite the versatile player. He never really shone at Boston, it's funny how some player's can excel at one club but not at another.

I've just finished watching the RedSox take batting practice at the expense of the Blue Jays, 12 - 2! Does anyone else get that uncomfortable feeling watching a team getting an absolute mauling?

RedSox are starting to play their payroll at last! Not before time. The Giants aren't playing badly, it's just that they're in a tough league and every other beggars playing better. It's only May, you don't need to panic until after the all-star break.

Hi Michael,

Yes, I don't really like complete drubbings in any sport. I felt so sorry for all the Watford fans at the FA Cup Final, especially the youngsters, on their big day.

Back to the ball game. Only saw the highlights after I'd posted but a couple of great catches from Pillar and superb play from Brandon Crawford to keep us in it, bottom of the ninth 4 mins in.....

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U2tZKM6cXVQ&feature=onebox

Glad your lot are starting to shine. I reckon if I had 6 months off with thousands of dollars and then had to go back to work for 6 months it'd take me a while to get back into the swing of things. I'd probably do one season and then stay in the pub  :D

Bring on Atlanta next.

Cheers weave  :beers:

Hadn't really thought about it like that. I guess I too would take a bit of motivating, I was bad enough after three weeks off work, without pay, when we went to the US last year, very difficult to get going again.

Hi @emjaybee,

Well you mentioned maulings.

Haven't seen the Giants (dwarfs) drubbing by the D' backs yet and probably wont. More of a Darth Maul by the looks of things.

 .

Oh well, lets move on. Next game tonight at 9 pm ish (UK). Thinking positive.

Cheers weave  :beers:

Oooo, that's just not right.

I've only just checked the scores from last night. That's grim bloke, you have my deepest sympathy.

I'll have a look at the lowhighlights from the league's later, but that's gonna be tough to watch.

Cheer up bloke, it is still only May! (How long do you think I can keep using that line?)

We're at the Astro's at the moment, although we lost last night. When I first got into baseball they were the team where everyone said "well, we've done crap this year, but at least we're not as bad as the Astro's". Recent WS winners!

Go figure.

Tomorrow (tonight?) is another day (game).

Hi all,

More rubbish from the Giants but maybe we've found a better starting pitcher that we could sign from Chicago  :D...

https://www.nbcsports.com/chicago/white-sox/white-sox-first-pitch-might-be-worst-history-baseball

Still keeping the faith though  :worried:

Cheers weave  :beers:

At least the fans'll go home smiling!

RedSox lost to the Indians last night, harumph.
