Some advice needed. Decoders and dapol locos...
« on: January 04, 2018, 02:58:24 AM »
Hello all,

Thank you in advance for your advice, Iím new to DCC  and donít want to be spending hours or pounds trying to get combinations to work

Here is my plan

NCE Powercab, like the ergonomics and features

All of my farish locos, 6 pin zimo decoders, opinion seems to be they are spot on

The issue seems to be Dapol, Iím aware dapol use gaugemaster/digitrax as their default decoder, however others are suggesting CT?

Has anyone had issues with the gaugemaster and an NCE powecab? I want good slow speed running

Also what if any CVís have had to be changed to get good running, sorry if this has been asked before, I have soent hours reading but always like to know answer much as a can before parting with cash

James

The Zimo MX622N decoder that you already use will fit almost all Dapol locos and is better and/or cheaper than the others you mention, so I think it's an easy decision.

Zimo every time for me, the control is superb and can be very finely tuned.  I'd steer clear of Guagemaster as most of their decoders are rebadged older versions or various other makers and have many less options to tweak.

Yep, IMO Zimo have totally sewn up the 6-pin market with the MX622N, unless you really need something tiny, like the CT offering, then I see absolutely no reason to buy anything else.

ZIMO MX622 without a doubt, if you are tight for space I'd use the tiny ZIMO MX616.

For a 6 pin decoder the Zimo MX622 is now my decoder of choice.

Sadly, if you're doing a hard-wire job on an older Farish model then the wired version is an extra £15; In which case the wired Digitrax DX126 becomes an option if you're looking to spend under £25.

The three dapol locos I own are

Pannier tank
Manor
A4

Will the six pin zimo fit in these? People have said that the dapol tenders are a bit tight

Subject to available space to fit it all in, a six-pin Zimo MX622 and six-pin wiring harness is going to be fairly cheap (£3.16 at my usual DCC decoder supplier), and significantly less than the £15 difference in decoder prices.

A further question,

What CV variables will I need to configure? Is there a guide somewhere? Ian it fairly simple to do?

A search for Zimo MX622 in "this Board" (top right of this page) produces a number of articles on this chip including:

In my experience the MX622N will fit a Manor and most other Dapol locos although it's a tight squeeze into GWR tenders and you will usually need to trim the pins.

I would expect it to fit a Dapol A2 but not a Pannier - I use a CT DCX77z in my small tank locos.

More of a general question about decoders; are 18 pin decoders inevitably going to be the only ones available in the coming years or will 6 pin locos still be produced?
I understand no one has a crystal ball but an educated guess would be appreciated.
I am 18 months into the hobby so my knowledge is still very limited.
Will I be able to use my Z21 with 18 pin decoders (if so will this work with 6 pin units in the same running session?)
Should I panic buy spare 6 pin decoders?

All the best

Steve

6 pin decoders will be available for many years to come.

You can drive any decoder fitted loco with your Z21 - 6,8, 18, 21 pin, doesn't matter, they'll all work.
