Found a short but interesting thread on RMWeb where some 1950s/1960s vehicles have been produced by imaginative chopping and swapping of Oxford and BT Models commercial vehicles parts.

Only one new release reported for next week so far:-

NCHT002 Churchill Tank 1st Canadian Army Brg. Dieppe 1942

Although this tank is from the 1942 Dieppe Raid, the Canadian forces played a major role is capturing territory along the French coast after D-day in 1944. 74 years ago today they captured the German big guns at Calais which had been shelling my home town of Dover since 12 August 1940. I often think about the courageous people who remained in the town in spite of regular shelling from those guns, as well as the same challenges faced by everyone else - air raids, and the new menace of V1 and V2 flying bombs.

Just one supplementary comment on tonight's announcements.

NTIL004 Austin Tilly Light AA Brigade - Malta 1942

This item has reappeared in the listing with an illustration. Although it was announced in January 2018 Oxford had not included it in trade lists or the catalogue. The "crazy paving camouflage" livery will be an interesting one to reproduce. The 1/76 scale version sold out in a very short period. Apologies to the military purists for my description of the camouflage. :-)

Disappointing that there is no new tooling, Oxford would appear to be making N gauge a low priority.

Not sure what you mean by 4 extra shapes in tooling, are these new unannounced or the new shapes we already know are planned?

Although some useful new colours and liveries, BP tanker likely to be popular

I think that Oxford will always treat N and 0 gauge as minority markets and concentrate their tooling spend on the 00 gauge market which is now a core collectors market not related directly related to its railway origin. The 0 gauge people are grumpy because Oxford really only makes cars, taxis, and vans in their scale, and no bigger vehicles, although there is one 1950s coach in the pipeline. So we are slightly better off in N, though I really don’t foresee Oxford being able to cover all eras and all vehicle types.

Weren’t Bachmann rumoured to be planning some Carflat fodder for when they get the rights to the NGS model?

Hi Mike,

When we first talked to Bachmann about doing the NGS carflat we wanted to make complementary packs of era-suitable "bog standard" cars.  These would've been in blister packs of mixed types/colours with four vehicles per pack - perfect for a single carflat.

Unfortunately they decided, having done some preparatory work, that the numbers didn't stack up.

cheers

Ben A.

I wonder if the N gauge ‘bog standard’ car market has been underestimated...
There are a few of us that have bought dozens of Cortinas or Anglias for the carflats and/or cartics. DJM certainly messed up with the expressions of interest suffering from poor marketing, and I think Bachmann might have missed a trick with the carflats.

In O gauge, Oxford has Lledo/Vanguards and Corgi as competition. I have a bunch of 60’s and 70’s cars in 1/43 for my O gauge, 6 out of 27 (22%) are Oxford.

In N gauge, their competition is pretty limited. Base Toys has made a good start, Bachmann has not got bus dimensions right... and so on.
So, perhaps, now would be a good time to go beyond the Cortina, Morris Minor and Anglia before Bachmann realizes that nobody wants an empty carflat!

*bog standard could happily include a Zephyr.

I think that it has been underestimated. But the case is not compelling enough for any of the manufacturers to have picked up on it.

If ever there was a way into that market the Carflat should have been the catalyst, the scope being for a single shape, like the Mk3 Cortina, in a range of colours. The risk is, of course, that the Carflat/Cortina combo becomes as repetitive as Metcalfe terrace houses on layouts.

Amongst last night's announcements in 1/76scale were cars already in the Corgi 1/43 range - Mk. 1 Capri, Mk.1 Escort and Audi Quattro - and the first two at least would warrant the shrink ray treatment for N. But I no longer believe that Oxford will be going that way. I would love to be proved wrong.

Images of the eleven new announcements are now shown on this page.

Although announced in January "NTIL004 Austin Tilly -- Light AA Brigade" still is not listed on the Oxford website although an image was shown on Thursday evening. Curious.

When might we expect the LR Discovery? I'm exhibiting next month.

Also, I've noticed several bog standard cars on Shapeways. Does anyone know how well they are doing?

The latest edition of the Oxford Diecast catalogue is available to view and download here:-

https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1017/3257/files/OCT-JAN_19.pdf?15357187787527904344

The N items are on pages 31-37, with one set on page 43. I tend to take the release dates as a finger in the air estimate. :)

There are probably still 3 or 4 deliveries before the end of the calendar year which might mean that the Q3/Q4 2018 scheduled items will be here before Christmas.
