Hello all

Not technically a layout update, but a stock update for the layout.

So after another year of announcements, there is still no sign of Regional Railways livery for the Farish Mk2a's. A little gutted really and quite surprised, but not to fear as 'Project RRMK2A' is here. I am pretty much sorted for coach rakes on Sutton St Annes, all bar one...

After managing to pick up 5 NSE Mk2a's at a reasonable price, I have began to strip them down. This includes removing the roof section, chassis, glazing units and vestibule ends. They come apart fairly easily, the glazing units are the worst, but take your time and persevere and be careful not to over stress them when removing! As the slightest false move and the glazing or part of a window is scrap! And no, you cannot buy spares! Saying all this, I can safely say that all came apart fine and are safely tucked away, but some are a pig!

Right, time to start stripping the paint...

Good old Phoenix SuperStrip, Chinese take away tubs, an old paint brush and disposable gloves. It's all mod cons here! Just bolsh the liquid on, don't be shy with it, then just pop the lids back on. Above photo is after 5 hours. Coming away nicely. Note the solid oak dinning room table! The dinning room is now my daughters play room, so the dinning room table has come in very handy as a workbench in the garage! Don't ask, expensive workbench I know

Another good coating of paint stripper slapped on with the old brush.

Pop the lids back on and leave overnight. The next job will be to wash the bodies off in luckwarm water (not soapy or washing up liquid - plain water is fine when cleaning bodies) with my trusty old toothbrush. Any areas that need further attention, just repeat the process once more until totally clean and back to bare plastic. Then the real fun begins...Paint out, airbrush out.

I shall post more updates when the painting begins.

Cheers
Anthony

He has been notified on Facebook and the rules of engagement spelled out  :P

I am not 100% pleased with the choice of “Donors” either....

But sure the end result will be great.

Yes, my thoughts exactly Tim. What's the betting (once the refurb 31's are out) Reg Rail Mk2a's will be announced for 2019!

I shall however be getting a couple of the NWR yellow 31602's and respraying them. Reg Rail and IC Mainline 31/4's are on the list to replace my ageing early China examples. After all, 602 was a ETH example before going to Network Rail so a perfect base model there.

They were actually going to be for another project, but since abandoned. I shall not mention what...

Hi Anthony,
According to my records both 31601 and 31602 were converted in 1999 from 31/1's; 31186 & 31191 respectively.  They were adapted, if I recall correctly with through ETH wiring and ETH controls only and were not actually ETH fitted.  This was to allow control of the ETH when working in Top & Tail mode with an ETH fitted 31.  The sets in use with Wessex Trains in the early 2000's were through wired to allow both loco's to provide power so that the trains could hopefully maintain the unit timings...

However as you say a good base model for re-spraying as 31/4's...  A fantastic layout by the way.  It brings back a few memories of the very few visits I made to the North West to sample some of the loco hauled workings at that time.

Hope this is of interest.
John

Shot myself in the foot there! See I always try and research first, but not for the 31's  But yes, the Farish 602's once released will make good base models. Just need to be careful for detail differences such as vertical grills and rad fan cowling when planning my 31/4's.

Thank you for the info John.

Cheers

Artnoon all.

Pratt truss signal gantry nearing completion now.

For those who have been following my progress, you'll know that inspiration for this came from Llandudno town. Standard Ratio kit's and MSE / Wizard models etched arms have been used. The guard rails are made from 0.3mm brass wire soldered together and glued in place.

After all this fiddly work, I managed to damage one of the dolls! So need to make another for the second call on signal. The trials and tribulations of modelling hey. The final job, once fixed in place will be to add the ladder.

A couple of new arrivals to the Sutton St Annes loco roster today. The postman has just delivered the stunning new Farish 47550 University of Dundee (It's not staying 550 though) And fresh from the workbench, Railfreight Redstripe 47142 The Sapper.

Don't forget to come along and see Sutton St Annes for yourself at The Essex N Gauge Show, Saturday 31st March 2018.

Cheers
