Perhaps the recent correspondence on here has rekindled interest in the card model I built five years, so here is the link for anyone who wants to give it a try:

Yes it does look diferent in those liveries allthough the real one was painted in black primer then in the grey livery with the red and black lining .There was only one fully built allthough another four were in varios stages of build .The real one never ran in  service but on test it pulled 15 coaches and got up to 90 M P H it was chain driven which was one of many failings including a broken axle ,the big problem was the heat in the central firemans cab and the fact that the boiler was offsett with a corridor from front to back which then needed 5 tons of pig iron to ballance it out .Kevin Robertson wrote and published some very good books if anyone wants any more information this includes some excellent photos.
I will be getting one off AR s kits as soon as he gets them printed and on sale.
I just love the unusual locos .I have just found my card kit and will be experimenting on a suitable chassis untill the kit is available.

I find the locomotive absolutely fascinating, but apparently the firemen found it hell.

Hence the nickname "bleeder."

After O V Bullied left the Southern Region he went on to design a turf burner in Ireland this was based on a similar design and that also fell by the wayside .with lots of faults.

Hello all,

Thanks for all the comments and info

I have almost finished the design now and it is about ready for the printers! I have added internal dividers, lights on the front, more roof detail and thinned the chain boxes to fit the loading gauge! Here are some final renders:

I have also ordered some brass detail parts to improve the overall look of the model as printing can't produce some of the finer details:)

Thanks,

Alex

Hello all,

I am about to get the 'Leader' printed and will shortly be in need of two N gauge couplings with springs. I know you can buy them in packs but I really don't need ten! If anyone has a couple spare, I would be really grateful! I will happily pay and cover postage:)

Cheers,

Alex

Personally, I think the prototype is one of the ugliest monstrosities ever created.

Many thought this of the Q1 but I thought, like the Leader, it was a wonderfully quirky thing.
Good luck, Alex

The Q1 at least had the excuse of being built to an Austerity limit, IMHO there's no excuse for the Leader. However it will make an, err... well...umm... interesting model! :D

Hello all,

This could be a rather long post so here goes...

I have received the print of the 'Leader' and have started to assemble and paint it as well as add brass details!

This is how it arrived along with all the component parts including the sprue and brass details I had ordered:

All spread out on the workbench to see what was what and how best to proceed:

Primed and ready for detailing and painting (I rather like it in its matt grey finish):

Next was the bogies, sprayed black and the red picked out with a paintbrush. The buffers are technically coach buffers but I think they look perfect! When I ordered the details I put down a wrong code so didn't get the ladders I had intended to order so will have to add these at a later date!

The 'Leader' sits on the rails for the first time in its painted guise!

This is where it stands at the moment, almost all painted but with details, glazing and transfers yet to do!

I have also managed to fit the couplings despite a slight design error (rectified by a little brass strip) and they seem to work well with the one little wagon I have at uni!

I also have name and number plates on order to finish it off! As it is being built to run on Flordon Heritage Railway, and the mainline network, it has been designed as the next-in-class, much like 'Tornado', and thus will be numbered 36006 following on from the original five of the class!

More updates soon!

Cheers,

Alex
