What Looks right behind a Deltic DP1?

PLD

First use of the Prototype Deltic was on the London Midland Region. As well as the trains names above, the Merseyside Express being another common working as well as a short spell on the Thames-Clyde via the Settle & Carlisle route. At that time Staniers in Crimson & Cream were most common, transitioning into Maroon livery and latterly superseded by Mk1s.

Later use was on the East Coast Main Line. Any combination of Gresleys, Thompsons and Mk1s, mostly Maroon with the odd C&C as nicely demonstrated by the excellent photo linked above. Different coach types were more likely to be mixed on the ER than the LMR, with more Gresley/Thompsons at the beginning and more Mk1s towards the end of her working life.

That model of a very avant-garde 21st century tower block (all glass and subtle horizontal displacements breaking up the perpendicular) behind the signal box does look a bit out of place though  :angel:

Ex-LMS Stanier Blood&Custard will do it, or maybe Crimson&Cream Maunsell coaches, I do like them :)

:thumbsdown: A definite NO! No Deltic ever worked on the Southern Region and Maunsell coaches off the Southern Region was extremely rare...

whilst on the ECML did it have trouble at Darlington Bank Top , the 'scratch' is still visible on the platform edge , thus banning it from future station stop's , although it brought changes to the lower body (tumblehome) on the production 55's.

Another with a mix of Gresley and Mk1 stock. I think this was pretty common on the ECML.



As mentioned earlier, Stanier stock was common in its early days on the LMR.

Size matters - especially if you don't have a lot of space - and N gauge is the answer!

I think the coach is the Thompson Dynamometer Car DE320041 / DB999500 / TEST CAR 2 confirming this is a test run and the (fitted) coal wagons are being used possibly for a starting load test...

A photo taken in 1967, in a book I have, the train on the WCML seems to be all maroon Mk1s. Another photo on the WCML has a Stanier leading coach; a third photo on the ECML has a maroon mk1.
In early WCML trials it ran 'overnight freight trains' between London and Liverpool; later it was used regularly on the 'Manxman' and 'Shamrock' trains.
In 1959, it transferred to the ECML and ran service trains at least on the former GN mainline an in Scotland. Google has some leads on the turns it worked, though most references are very short.

Yes I was on an Ian Allan Spotters' Club excursion returning to Euston from Crewe and DP1 passed us heading an up fitted freight. Pity there doesn't seem to be any photographic evidence of it on freight, apart from the 'Minfit' test.
