Never really given it much thought, but on the odd occasion I did, I always thought that when the track went into a tunnel, the wires went up the hill and came back down on the other side!

That's what happens on my layout, any rate.  :hmmm:

Ah, but the Severn tunnel goes under the Severn estuary, where it is 3km wide! Telegraph wires surely didn't cross that!

Hmmm. Now you've got me!

But there again, in the first Tom Cruise Mission Impossible movie, the entire catenary sytem disappeared above the Eurostar long before it even reached the Channel Tunnel!!!  ;D
