Many congratulations from me, too. Very well deserved. Alas, I have to make do with admiring it only on video.

Tormouth - The March South!
« Reply #496 on: October 13, 2016, 02:13:29 PM »
So with the Hornby show out of the way I am reverse deigning the next 8 feet of the layout extension, this will be the far left board, 4ft by 1ft 6" it will house the South Devon Clay mines, so Clay Dries and ancillary buildings, what do you think of the track layout I have in mind ?

First Scarm attempt!

Bottom RH track exists onto the as yet undesigned 4 ft board between existing Tormouth tunnel and the new board

Cheers Paul

Looks good to me. The local railway must be very profitable to afford such grandiose expansion plans ;)

Proposed funding for the extension was previously deferred by the SWMBO Department of the fun Police!  However a firm stance means funding has now been released !! :D

Hi Paul,

Interesting, but I am having trouble envisaging how the whole thing will link together.  Are the two tracks next to the clay dries sidings?  Will the existing hill with the caravan camp be removed?

cheers

Ben A.

Hi @Ben A , yes the two tracks at the side of the dries are sidings, theres still only a single through track, the four feet in between the board above and where the existing hill is, is still a work in progress, i envisage the loco exiting the other side of the original hill through a tunnel

Hi Paul,

Ah, that makes sense.  I must admit I hadn't twigged that another board was go to between this and the original layout.

Look forward to the other plan when you've had a chance to do it!

cheers

Ben A.

Hi Paul

It feels too complex for me - things like that tend to be done as cheaply as possible so the diamond crossing and bi-directional entry aren't really normal.  You would be more likely just to have to reverse in from one direction (and do away with the crossing).  Should also give you more space.

Cheers, Mike

I fully agree, Mike. All railways installed the minimum trackwork required to safely operate the expected traffic. Then BR would have further rationalised away any trackwork not absolutely necessary so reversals would be quite prototypical and, in any case, more interesting from an operational point-of-view.

Thank you Chris i will do as you both suggest... im thinking due to the single track working the second as yet undefined board should contain a passing loop on its way back up to Tormouth..

If the timetable absolutely required a passing loop BR would, reluctantly, have kept it.
