“You exaggerate, Richard. Let's just say that not only am I confident of looking after myself but the three of you, too, from any likely threat.”

“Which is why Sophia will be a member of your group at all times until and unless we are certain that you are no longer at any risk!”

“Richard is pretty handy with guns, knives and his bare hands,” added Sophie. “Between the two of us, you are in VERY safe hands!”

“Thank you, that's very reassuring, I am sure,” responded Sylvia. “But what does that, EXACTLY mean?”

“It means, Miss Trevelver” replied Captain Grenville with a dazzling smile, “that Sophie and I will be with you at all times. Specifically, you must stay together, as a group, with us. Enemy agents will be looking for an opportunity to seize any of you on their own to take away for questioning. If one of you really has to go somewhere on their own, then one of us must accompany you whilst the other guards the rest of you. If it is somewhere where a man should not go, then, of course, that person will be Sophie.” His companion nodded.

“So, you will both be staying with us, in our rented house in Chelsea?” asked Eli.

“That will be VERY crowded,” interrupted Sofi, raising her thick dark black eyebrows.

“That will not be a problem,” stated Captain Grenville, matter-of-factly.

“Why?”

“Because the Admiral has arranged for us to use the next-door house. You will all be sleeping upstairs with one of us, on guard below, helped by trusted friends, to cover the front and back.”

“How did you achieve THAT,” asked Sylvia.

“Simple, Miss Traveller. A ‘Gas Board official’ informed your neighbours – as you know, a very pleasant and most understanding recently retired couple – of a persistent and dangerous gas leak which, very regrettably, required their house to be evacuated until further notice. Because it was, they were informed, most probably, the fault of the Gas Board, they were given very generous compensation in the form of an all-expenses paid stay at the BR-owned “Manor House Hotel”, Moretonhampstead, Devon, where the couple is enjoying a very relaxing holiday!”

“It will enable all your friends that you have arranged to meet with to stay with you, too,” added Sophie. “Much better for all of you, isn't it?”

“And much safer,” added Captain Grenville, gravely. “A specially borrowed BR liveried lorry took away the couple’s furniture in a shipping container after it was replaced by sufficient army camp beds, tables, chairs, cooking equipment, plates, etc. to, reasonably comfortably, accommodate everyone. Angela has ordered all the food and drinks you will need from Harrods plus plenty of board games, etc. to keep you all amused, and it has all already been safely delivered by one of our trusted agents. Television sets, record players and radiograms have also been rented and installed. Your friends have had the latest LPs and singles delivered including …”

“The latest by Enka Lou-Lou and John Smith and the Common Men,” interrupted Sophie.

“Well, I can see that you've got everything well organised,” remarked Eli, with a sigh.

“We like to think so,” smiled Sophie. “All your friends have received a telegram, in your names, duly informing them of the arrangements but with a different cover story, of course.

“We apologise for not asking you, but time was of the essence,” stated Captain Grenville.

“Humph,” responded Eli.

“And Jeremy?” asked Sylvia, quickly.

“I am expecting an update delivered by secure courier at Basingstoke station, Miss Trevelver,” replied Captain Grenville.

“Let's hope that it is good news, Sylvia,” said Eli, graspng her friend's hand.

“Oh, yes, do let's, Eli,” replied her tearful friend.

Alan Poldory, thanks to changes of outer clothing and frequent changes of transport – using local buses wherever possible and avoiding urban centres – had, finally, arrived in London’s East End where he rented a dingy single bedroom flat above a pie and eels’ shop. Firmly locking the door behind him – he had had the most secure look money could buy fitted – he threw off his worn second-hand coat and battered cap, placed his fattened wallet under his old pillow, lay down on the creaking bed and, still feeling very pleased with himself, immediately, fell into an exhausted sleep untroubled by any disturbing dreams. Tomorrow morning would be time enough to report to the fearsome Twins with a story safely concocted. Unknown to Alan, not one but two hidden watchers had observed and reported his arrival and they, or others, would be watching for his departure.

The Admiral, in his obscure Whitehall office, had, at last, received some more good news. As calculated by Susan Foreman, the two British Transport Police constables had found themselves suddenly in a field outside Oxford that very afternoon with no idea how they had got there or what had happened to them during the intervening hours. After making their bewildered way to Oxford railway station, they had duly reported for duty and their very relieved, but highly perplexed, superiors had passed on the good news up the chain of command until it reached Whitehall.

Like a chess grandmaster reviewing the board before making their final moves, the Admiral then very carefully reviewed the latest reports on the location of all the key protagonists. The “Chelsea Girls", their two highly experienced guards, together with all their friends, male and female – and, he reminded himself, men who could be relied on in times of trouble – would soon be safe in two adjoining secured houses in Chelsea. Alan Poldory had been spotted by a CID informant returning to his rented flat – an extraordinarily basic error which proved that the man was completely out of his depth – and was now under observation twenty-four hours a day. The hourly whereabouts of the Twins and their leading gang members, together with all known and suspected gru agents were also being reported. The recovered orichalcum was safely deposited in the country's most secure secret facility. All CID, Special Branch, Secret Service (MI5) and even MI6 (Secret Intelligence Service) leave had been cancelled with a maximum alert authorised at the highest levels. The Admiral rubbed his hands. Yes, everything was coming together most satisfactorily! He just needed to make a couple more telephone calls. Soon it would be time to ring for his customary pot of Earl Grey with ‘Rich Tea’ biscuits for one but first, he had some very important calls to make. He picked up the receiver.

“Get me Trevelver Castle, Cornwall. I wish to speak to the Head Gamekeeper, Jonas Cares, please, ask for the Head Butler, Huw Jenkins; then the BR Yardmaster, Bill Truscott, Wadebridge railway station; followed by Giles Roskrow, inform him that is a ‘Code Red’ and he will need to gather all his most trusted colleagues at the Honey Trap, ASAP. He’ll be informed of its location. But, first, I have a very urgent task for him. Got all of that?”

“Yes, Admiral. I took my usual coded shorthand notes.”

“Good. Dependable as ever.”

“Connecting you, now, Admiral, to Mr. Huw Jenkins,” announced the cut-glass accent of one of the now middle-aged former Bletchley ‘gals’ who had the necessary top security clearance, competence and character to work for the Admiral.

“Thank you, Dorothea.”

‘Battle of Britain’ 4-6-2 No. 34064 "Fighter Command" of 72A Exmouth Junction on a BR SR Green BR Standard 3-car Set of BSK+CK+BSK on a Penmayne-Wadebridge-Exeter working, via Halwill and Okehampton, which has had three vans which will be detached at Wadebridge to be worked back to Devon via Bodmin Road. [I'm aware that No. 34064 is missing its Giesl exhaust but I cannot find a scale drawing of it.] The third van is ean ex-LNER "Fruit" van used to convey finest malt whisky!
