« on: January 21, 2013, 09:08:30 PM »
over the past few weeks i've gathered a few kits together for my new (first) layout, some card, some plastic (ratio). a local model shop recommended PVA for my metcalfe brewery and factory card kits? is good old airfix type poly cement okay for ratio plastics or should i be looking for better products? as always guys, any and all opinions are most welcome as i looked in a few monthlies and it seems they all use different brands/types for  the same job!!!!!

Evostick,
Uhu  get the packs in the boxes from the shop.
PVA  big container from the works,
Superglue
Humbrol Liquid Poly. The precision pots with the needle dispenser on the top. Used on all plastics.
Also keep a Pritt Stick around for small jobs.

The other thing I keep is a pack of cocktail sticks to put the glue where I want it.
Modelling stupid small scale using T gauge track and IDl induction track. Still have  N gauge but not the space( Japanese Trams) Excuse spelling errors please, posting on mobile phone

Pva from hobby stores for card and proper non cheap superglue with a toothpick for plastic kits :)

However today I found that 1/2 a litre of green paint dropped on the garage floor is very adhesive too :( (but that's another story!)

Hello Mike,
I tend to use four types of glue depending on the job in-hand.

Superglue:
Is good for application to small and minute parts that are fiddly where you need the glue to dry really quickly. Long term though the bond isn't always that strong if you knock the item.

Araldite:
For things which need greater strength, or aren't so fiddly so can be held in position longer whilst the glue dries.

RCA Modellers Glue:
I use this with glazing a lot because it dries clear and is workable for a while after application. Although it is quite a strong glue - it's still possible to prise parts apart months or years later if necessary. It's also good for paper or card surfaces.

Mek Pak or Liquid Poly:
Ideal for plastic kits and constructions made with Plasticard etc.

Oh, and finally there's the aerosol adhesives such as Photomount - which although I"ve not used for railway modelling know from my professional life as being excellent where a really thin coat is needed if you are mounting backscenes etc onto a board ... use them with a roller for perfectly flat surface free of bubbles or lumps ... and you can reposition for a short period of time after application :)

Polystyrene cement is OK for Ratio kits but I prefer some of the liquid solvents that come in bottle such as Mekpak or Pro Weld.

PVA is too slow drying for card kits. Contact cement is quite good or you could splash out on some specialist card glue such as those made by Deluxe Materials.

PVA is good for sticking down scenic scatters when mixed 50:50 with water. I also find some latex adhesive such as Copydex quite useful to have around.
Well, that's just not good enough. Some fount of all knowledge you are!   ;)

I've just started using Roket Card Glue. It sticks stuff other than card too. It is quick drying and you only need a tiny amount.
Just one Pendolino, give it to me, a beautiful train, from Italy

I use a lot of different types of glue  each  with it's own merits.

PVA

Aliphatic  glue  this dries hard & can be sanded

CA  or Superglue

Copydex/latex carpet glue i  use this for gluing down  track  if ever you need to move track  it  comes  off the underside of sleepers  cleanly  leaving them   like new.

2 Part Epoxy Resin glue   for metals it give a great bond once keyed  very   quickly.

UHU      for  carboard kits such  as Metcalfe /Scalescenes.

You asked about  Airfix glue / Polystryrene  cement i  dont use it at all   last time it was here i  bought a kit & it was included  went straight in the bin   liquid poly  or  even  better Liquid Plasticweld  i   have an old Humbrol   liquid  poly bottle that has a brush   in the lid  which is  ideal  applying the plasticweld  one it has done its work  you'll need a razorsaw to divde  the parts.

I use Gorilla wood glue for nearly every bit of card kits, mainly the Scalescenes print your own.The Gorilla glue is similar to PVA adhesive but I've come to prefer it.

I can fully recommend a fine tip applicator for any PVA type gluing, also good for applying Roket card glue when you get fed up of having to keep unblocking the nozzle on the bottle.I used to keep Roket glue in one Fine tip applicator and PVA in another.

Just come across this topic. For card models I used to use UHU. But it has now gone "stringy" apparently because of some EU ruling regarding Volatile Organic Compounds. I was advised to use PVA instead and a nice young lady has supplied me with "Anita's tacky PVA glue" from Amazon and it is fine.

I'll give another thumbs up for Rocket card glue. It's brilliant.

Not so impressed with the Rocket plastic glue though.

I use Plastic Weld for anything with styrene (my buildings are plastic not card).

PVA for sticking scenery to the baseboard - seems to work well with Knauf insulation board as well as wood.

No More Nails for sticking scenic items where the glue mustn't run during setting.  However this dries white - does anyone know of anything similar that dries clear?

Superglue or UHU only when I have to.

I use a hot glue gun for sticking most things including usually my hands and other parts I wasn't trying to glue  :worried:

Wood Glue (Which is PVA based) for anything from scenery to ballasting

Super Glue Gel

Here's my collection...

Rocket card glue - best for card kits
Medium CA - proper superglue, not the cheapo 1 a packet stuff
PVA - I find the Wickes stuff the best value vs quality.
UHU - Useful for card kits, but is quite stringy
MR HOBBY Liquid cement - Japanese plastic kit glue, dries very fast !
Pritt stick - Great for backscenes as it doesn't cause bubbling as long as you don't use to much.
Hot Glue gun - Strong bonds such as wood and thick card, when nothing else works, try this !
Finally, not a glue but the most useful sticky product known to man... Blu Tac !
