A few months ago I picked up Train Simulator from "Steam" - online games retailer for a few quid.

Me and my youngest son got around to having a play with it yesterday..see below..

We went on to do a route from Brighton to London Victoria which was quite fun but didn't get any screenshots.  Very easy to pick up, especially in "simple" mode (my default approach to life - !).  With a little more time I'm sure it will be become a favourite distraction !

Ah yes.  My wife gave this game to me for Christmas.  Probably the biggest mistake she's made in a while!

I like to just do the "Quick Drive" using the simple control setting just to play engine driver for a few minutes, but it is possible to spend hours at this.  Ask me how I know....

Still, good fun.  I do wish my computer had more "horsepower" though as I had to dial down the graphics detail quite a bit in order to get the game to run at an acceptable speed.

Picture is of a third-party modeled Peak in Durham from the East Coast Mainline add-on.

I can see how hours can quickly pass by with a game like this!

The third part scene looks interesting, no dissimilar to Microsoft Flight Simulator (another hobby of mine).

You are quite right games of this type do need plenty under the hood to make it a smooth and enjoyable experience!

What source did you get the third party add-on (engine & scenery) from?

Thats a very nice view of the bridge and Durham Cathedral, rather well done I must say.

May have to take a poke once it runs on steambox, although I did find OpenBVE rather boring... it's just not the same as being in the cab of a real one.

Lionwing, the Peak was purchased from a third party developer website called Iron Horse House (http://www.ironhorsehouse.co.uk/), which probably fortunately for my wallet, ceased business on December 31, 2013.  The IHH website is still up but you cannot buy anything from it and its Facebook page makes VERY clear the propietor decided to pull the plug.

Being a 1Co-Co1 loco fan, the day after I got the game installed - it only comes with a limited number of locos - which must have been December 27, I went searching for add-on Peaks and Whistlers.  It turned out they aren't available from STEAM.  Class 40s are still available from http://www.justtrains.net/ but Peaks were only available from IHH - and so of course I had only 4 days to buy.  Seems like plenty of time, but the service IHH used for online sales was very dodgy and my credit card was rejected more than once, and then for a day or two the site was down because IHH had exceeded its bandwidth - I suspect because everyone like me was desparately trying to buy from him at the last minute.  I feel fortunate I was able to make a purchase just in time!

The East Cost Mainline add-on was purchased from the STEAM website and was not from a third party developer.

'WCML North' has to be my favourite overall, but I've been playing the newly released WSR one a fair bit recently :)

Am looking forward to the 'WCML Over Shap' that's coming out soon, as it's done by Keith Ross, the same chap who did 'WCML North'

Don't really have a favourite loco, but generally I prefer the diesel ones, as they're the easiest to control, I find I'm spending too much time looking at guages/displays in the Steam ones and not enjoying the scenery.
