Layout naming suggestions (wanted for totem)
« on: May 15, 2019, 12:58:53 AM »
First, sorry if wrong category - none seemed to fit.  Wondering how people come up with names for their layouts, seems like some are real, while some are made up.. I am trying to come up with a name for mine.. Trying to model something resembling the lake district. I have not really lived in the uk since I was little, so I am having a creative block coming up with ideas.. Happy to use a fake layout name . Really want to get a totem :)

Some background. (to help give this a personal connection to me). My late father grew up on Walney Island, lived on beach crescent.. My aunt lived on a street called turnpike link..

Family last names of pick/travis used.. Thank you for your creativity, while I am on empty.

Love it. Can't do much better with the Lake District connection. I think you've nailed it.

All of the names on my layout are real places (including Lake District ones such as Troutbeck Bridge, Dunmail Raise, Catbells), but none of them bear the slightest resemblance to the actual place.

However, as LASteve says, I think themadhippy has got it first time.

If it was a US layout I would have gone for Walney Beach Turnpike, but as it is UK I'd just go for Walney Travis, a rural village somewhere in the lakes

Maybe chrispix can clear this up for us....

The layout is to be British?

I feel that, through no fault of his own, Chris is thinking along  American practice, simply because of the language used. He has been there for a while!

No disrespect meant in any form, Chris. In fact I sort of had the same problem.  ;D

Transition Period with both steam/diesel. Mainly fictitious.. But wanted to add in the haverthwaite station, as a throwback to visiting it as a child..

Layout is attached. (full res). Basically mainline with a couple stations, shunting yard and small mine.

Chris,

picking out a name for your layout has to be one the the special pleasures of our hobby.

I have three stations on mine and have no idea why I chose what I did!  :) Literally all plucked out of thin air!
Saxon Street (we are seeped in history down here in Kent and I liked the alliteration).
Farningham Central (Central maybe indicating a more major station)
Cotton Hill (Don't know - sounds like a little used branch line name).

Since your location is the Lake district then something indicating water and/or heights.
Upper Walney?
Turnpike Water?

Good luck - sleep on it. It'll come

Alec.

You can't beat a nice drop of Southern.
