Hi there

The NGS has been asked about coupling between profi-couplers and rapidos.
As I've never dabbled on the dark side (apart from Ferry Wagons :) ), can you change them easily or not at all?

TIA
Bob

Should be easy, usually. Mostly used is the type for NEM pockets and should simply pull out. But if older stock has been converted to Profi, then maybe you would need replacement Rapidos with e.g. T shank. But if stock already has Profi couplers then it will be quite easy to return to the original coupler. The other way round - converting to Profi - will not always be possible.

Here the different Fleischmann couplers (Profi/Rapido) - modern stock with NEM pocket use no. 9545 Profi or 9525 Rapido:

[edit] - haha, both of us writing at the same time  @Hiawatha

Not used Profis myself as I think they're even more ugly than standard Rapidos, but as far as I know you can get Profi-couplings with shanks for NEM, T-shank and coil-spring, or various styles of Fleischmann's older style pocket with the flat metal spring.

See the link below and tick the box to filter for N only:
https://www.fleischmann.de/de/productsearch/0-0-0_1000_0-1-0-0-0-003005_105-1/products.html

So it depends what shank the existing Rapido uses (probably T-shank or NEM), and bear in mind that other brand's T-shank pockets may not be precisely the same dimensions, meaning the Profi coupling shank might need a little careful filing to fit the other brand's pocket.

To go the other way (Profi to Rapido) it again depends on what shank the Profi has.

I came across this video a while back showing the change of couplings process, replacing standard couplings with Fleischmann’s 9545 Profi coupling.

It’s by the nice guy at A&H Models in Brackley, and dates from 2015. Change of coupling begins at about 1m50s into video. Hope it helps.

For me profe couplers are the most reliable, and also provides shorter couplings on vehicles with short.coupling-kinematic and NEM pocket, so you can see them running almost bumper to bumper. For this vehicles with NEM pocket replacement is as easy as remove by pulling the standard and insert the profil.

For vehicles without the NEM pocket I would say that you can install profi in any vehicle by any manufacturer. Almost all my rolling stock runs with profi couplers. As you probably have already seen Fleischmann offers a wide choice.

Nevertheless, I recommend to be aware with some models with NEM and short-coupling-kinematic in which the profits couplers will not be effective (impossible to couple because the too short distance between) as the kinematic is not correctly place a per NEM standards.
