I admit to a fair bit of ignorance, when it comes to the Caledonian, but, should there be a spectacle plate to the cab rear?

Perhaps you're drilling the holes later?

Plate is in place, but holes still to be cited and drilled.

Someone said spectacles and they were right!

These have now been drilled out, and the bunker capped off for a coal load (eventually). Prior to this, care was taken to drill the thick base piece I have at the bottom of the bunker and fit a nut to correspond with the Dapol chassis rear attachment.

Further, I have also pressed on to fit the coal rails around the bunker and the two cylindrical pieces below the rear footplates. The side pieces of the footplates have also been fitted and filed to shape along the full length of each side of the loco.





The loco is high on the chassis at front end, but does sit down, so just needs the front attachment fabricated to secure it square.



There is a bit of a gap still between cab and side tanks here - I suspect this will be a case of using filler or lower melt solder to fix, as trying to fill with standard solder it risky for messing up other areas. I re-shaped the top of the dome also.

Next will probably be cab steps and heading back forwards to fit the front pipes and some of the remaining parts. I have some parts I'm missing, including the safety valves and the tank filler caps, both of which will go on the list to order from N Brass.

The last few nights I've managed to get the steps fitted to the Caly tank.  These were an exercise in speed mostly and frustration for the rest!

Both front and rear steps were shaped from cast steps, some N Brass, some of unknown origin from the scrapbox. The cab steps went on easily and quickly, but needed their sides filling with solder to give material to form the curve to the footplate from. At this point one of the rear cylinders fell off! And cue an hour and a half of utter frustration that it simply would not stay stuck when trying to re-solder, every joint just being dry. Eventually it was fixed back on, but for something that went on first time, it was a pain in the backside to have about 10 further attempts to get it back on.

The two front steps took 3 to get right, as again the first went on fine and bent up to the correct shape - but the second snapped in two (brass castings do not like multiple bends). Fortunately I managed to find a third to replace it in the scrapbox.

They aren't perfect, but as close as we are going to get for this build.

Busy times!

In amongst the various plethora of projects I've started another. This is a little different and not a project I'd likely ever have done myself not being a Southern Region enthusiast. This is a build for a forum member of no less than 3 Southern Z class heavy tank locos.

I'll be working this in parallel with the other projects, and should be some interesting builds with specific details for specific locos.

Whitemetal kits can come together quickly at first with the major components forming up to give the general shape of the model fairly fast.

As such I've put together the basics of all 3 Z classes. Fit on these was ok, though some filing was needed with the top boiler component around the tank interface as the boiler otherwise sat at a bit of a forward angle.







The harder work starts to come now - the detail.

I don't think the SR nicked their chassis from the LMS like I have....  :)

First detail starting on the Zs, boiler handrails now fitted to one. I deliberately kept the boilers separate for attaching later once everything possible is added to them, as this will ease construction.
