Post by: ngaugepaul on November 10, 2018, 12:40:59 PM
Has anyone yet to receive (if they subscribe) or see in the shops either the December copy of Model Railroader or the November copy of Railfan & Railroader magazines ?

Hi Paul, I received my December issue of Model Railroader last Wednesday. I do not subscribe to Railfan and Railroad, I cannot help you with that inquiry.

Hi Paul, good to hear your Model Railroader arrived. There is a very nice article on page 34 dealing with Espee (Southern Pacific) modeling being done in the UK, along with Eric Brooman's excellent article on his up to date Utah Belt. MR is definitively on their A game with the December issue.

Did someone say Southern Pacific?  :scowl:

Oh yeah, I'm a big fan of his modelling.
I saw the article on MRH and also on YouTube.
Fantastic modelling there!
Their module concept is just right for me.
Of course, one thing that I don't understand....the size of models.
You know how I feel about it,  :NGaugersRule:

Hi Rich,
So far I have only flicked through the magazine but yes I spotted the SP feature which looks very interesting. Nice that the UK could get a mention.
Plymouth is "just down the road" for me so hopefully I may get to see it sometime perhaps at the Exeter MRS show.
Regards
Paul

Not either of the quoted mags, but my copy of Railpace Magazine from deepest Pennsylvania turned up today after taking about 2 weeks longer than usual to make it across the Atlantic.

My January Model Railroader has not arrived but as my subscription lapsed with the December issue I don't really expect it to. Sorry I can't be more help.

Hi Rich,
Thanks for the advice.
This morning they were delivered by the postman. Both came together as per last month.
One had a German label on it so perhaps they go via the Continent on the way to the UK.

Hi Paul, Good to hear your magazines arrived before the end of the month. That is an odd routing, considering there are regular air flights between New York City and London. I believe here in the States International mail is handled by FedEx, It's possible FedEx has a major distribution center in Germany?

An interesting thing occurred with my subscription to MR. I signed up for the electronic version several years ago (I have entirely too many paper copy MR's starting from back in the late '60's) but I received a paper version of the January edition. I'm thinking that it's maybe because it's the 85th anniversary of the magazine. Anyone else out there have a similar experience?

Oh, and by the way... Happy New Year!

Hi Tom, Happy New Year. I only receive the paper copy of the magazine, so I can't answer your question.

Did you go to the MR web site and download a copy of the first Model Railroader magazine?

http://mrr.trains.com/-/media/Files/PDF/2018/TheModelRailroaderJanuary2934.pdf (http://mrr.trains.com/-/media/Files/PDF/2018/TheModelRailroaderJanuary2934.pdf)

The magazine has really change in the last 85 years.

Yes, I did download the first edition. Apparently, from what I've read on the MR forums, there was a big screw up with that as well. People who received paper copies were supposed to also get a paper copy of the first edition. Some didn't and some of those saw editions in the hobby shops with the paper copies in the plastic bag.

This whole first edition thing is interesting since anyone who has access to the MR digital archives has been able to read that edition at any time, and apparently because of their horrible customer service and web site management, the full digital archives have been open to the world.

Try this link and let me know if you are able to view the first edition from their digital archives: http://mrarchive.mrr.trains.com/?iid=93752#folio=1 (http://mrarchive.mrr.trains.com/?iid=93752#folio=1)

I can do it without signing in to the MR web site.

Hi Tom,

I only subscribe to the print edition and there was no first edition with my January copy so I was delighted to see the link that you provided.

Yes I have also been able to access the full digital archive of which I will try and make full use until they eventually catch up.

Thanks once again.

Paul

PS I seem to be one of the last who receives the print copy so if anyone is awaiting their February copy mine arrived yesterday.

Hi Tom, When I click on the link the web page opens on the first edition, but there is a MR letter head in the middle of the page that blocks a portion of the text. When I try to advance to the next page using the "next" icon, the web site asks me to log in. Since I have a log in for MRVP and MR, I clicked on the Login button. The page reloads with the February 2019 edition and the MR letter head still centered in the web page, which blocks out all text in the center of the page. I can only view the February 2019 edition. Of Note, I use Mozilla Firefox Quantum as my primary web browser. I like several of the features available in Firefox. I did use the Opera web browser, until they changed it. I didn't like the new layout, for me it was cumbersome and that is why I went back to Firefox. I've had issues in the past with Microsoft Internet Explorer and that is why I rarely use that web browser.

If I open the link in Microsoft Internet Explorer, I am able to view past issues and read past issues, but not by using the next page button, I have to click on the contents button to view articles within that past issue. If I use the next button, the page reloads to the February 2019 edition. It does appear Kalmbach is having issues with their archive. That is kind of a sore spot for me, I understand their logic. They are looking for re-occurring income. I preferred the DVD method, a one time lump sum to have back issues instead of being nickel and dime for the rest of my life, but maybe that's just me.

On a side note, Kalmbach no longer has customer support in house. It's now run by a company out of Texas and yes I've heard some real horror stories about the new customer support. Unfortunately this appears to be a sign of the times, sub contract work out to try and save a few dollars. You'd have to wonder what Al Kalmbach would think about that?

Interesting results!

I primarily use the Chrome browser but I have Firefox on standby. I haven't experienced any of the things that you mentioned although I have had other issues. Sometimes after reading one of the issues, even the current one, the pages disappear and are replaced with the small broken link symbol. At that point I have to click the reload page button on the browser, which then takes me to the first page of the current edition, even if I was reading one from years ago. So, then I have to navigate back to the issue I was reading and find the page where I left off. Talk about annoying...

I did see some talk on both the MRH and MR forums about Kalmbach outsourcing their customer service, first to some firm in Florida and now Texas. It also seems that their archives were off-line for quite a while in 2018. I contacted customer service several times and never heard back. I finally posted something to their forum and one of their editors replied that they knew about the problem and were working on it.

As the saying goes, What a way to run a railroad.
