Poll
Question:
Which part of the world are you modelling?
Option 1: UK (1:148)
Option 2: Europe (1:160)
Option 3: North America
Option 4: South America
Option 5: Africa
Option 6: Japan and Asia
Option 7: Australia, New Zealand, Antarctica
Option 8: Fantasy - I run a mix of trains from different countries
Option 9: Other region not listed above
Interested to know which part of the world you are modelling. I have split UK out from Europe as it has 1:148 scale. If you have more than one layout, please can you vote for your main layout.
Seems to be broken - if I select Europe it unselects the UK (leaving aside the UK being part of Europe :-\ )
Some of us have multiple layouts
It's not broken. Pengy has made the poll to have just one vote - which is obviously a problem if you have more than one layout, but the question is more of what you model as an individual, so I'm guessing you'd have a mix. Just that the fantasy bit would be wrong. I'll leave it up to Pengy to sort out!!! ;D
I've changed this to a maximum of 5 votes per user
UK - Somewhere in the SE of England (south of the Thames), mid-late 60s.
I'd love to model some Russian trains as, being a true northerner, I love grimness. But I suspect the chance of getting GF or Dapol to produce a VL85 loco would be quite slim.
.
UK here, but no set area or era.

What they'll do is assume that it runs standard gauge, and not 5 foot gauge. At least that won't be as obvious an error as the company that made an HO Scale Garret (whose 1:1 track is 2 foot) to run on 16.5 mm track.
UK and US for me, although after seeing a great Japanese layout at TINGS, I could be tempted.... :hmmm:
...and then add German, Swiss, Australian etc...
This could get expensive...

Mine is a fictitious branch off of the North Cornwall Railway,It's called Morwena, named after Morwenstowe, the reason my Dad was stationed there during WW 2,he was working on mobile ground to air radar with the American Army.
I would like to do a South African route, but there isn't really any thing suitable,I could repaint some American Railroad loco's and stock to look like SAR trains of the 1960/70's,the reason why I worked for SAR\SAS in the 1970's

My layout is called Martini Holt (Anytime, anyplace, anywhere, in the UK)

And there was me thinking you had the hots for the receptionist in Doc Martin :dunce:
It's and interesting Poll, and just 'cos you asked...
Very definitely New Zealand, specifically the North Island, and even more specifically, the section between Pohakura and Kawhia.
(You may care to Google it - it's a somewhat rugged area.)
Komata
"TVR - serving the Northern Taranaki ..."
On the subject of "fantasy railways", around 1972 or 3 I built a diorama of a layout set on the Moon using a converted DC3 fuselage as the train, running on 00 track, and with the Airfix Astronaut set as passengers, Moonbuggies in the car park etc. Sadly no picture survives. I guess that passes as a "fantasy line"? :-\

What a brilliant idea for a layout
:thankyousign: Back then we were all Moon mad - the Apollo landings were still current and moon bases were being talked about. My thinking was "Bases, mmm, multiple - why not a linking railway between them?" I had a DC3 body and a great imagination! I have often thought of reproducing it but Airfix no longer make the Astronaut set - shame on them :'(
Somewhere from 1990 to the present day and an area that covers most of the UK but mainly the Midlands if I like it I can run it.
I have toyed with the idea of a wagon works / workshop so I can run wagons that would not usually run through the area.

This kind of thing?

Cheers Jon :)
Can't work out how to vote, but for the record, just South of Stockport where the WCML crosses the Midland line from Buxton to Cheadle Heath.
Cheers Jon :)
I want to model my local patch, but nobody makes models of the units that run through it.
Hi Jane,
I suppose that depends on what date you want to model. I would have thought there were quite a few models available for that area, steam classes and EMUs for example?
For example, even a quick look at Hatton's web site shows Class 33, 73 and 411 EMUs, lots of hauled stock, freight and passenger suitable for SR layouts, Southern steam and even Southern Railway buildings.
Are you sure you have nothing suitable?
Best wishes,
Greg.
If you want to model present day passenger trains in the South West/South/South East there then this what is available to buy new:
Kato Eurostar
You may be able to pick up second hand Southern Turbostars, SWT Turbostars and SWT Express Sprinters.
The Cross Country Voyager is no longer available either :(

I want to model things at Beckenham Junction as they are today. That means Electrostars and Networkers in Southeastern livery, and 455s, 456s and Electrostars in Southern livery. Eurostars used to run through, but since HS1 opened to St Pancras we don't see them any more.
My current (only) layout is N.A. but my next one will be British outline. I'm very excited about starting.
My current layout (still building) is BR(WR) set around 1970 - to me the best time there was. Everything before had been building to that moment, steam had gone :claphappy:, diesel Hydraulics were everywhere :claphappy: :claphappy:, diesel electrics were fairly rare here :claphappy: - who could ask for more??
It is set on the Bristol Channel coast near where the west of Somerset meets the East of Devon and I have invented quite a complex history for the line (based in part on RD Blackmore's "Lorna Doone") which I believe is quite as important as any other part of the layout if it is to reflect a believable scene.

Anyone with different taste in regions, period, or traction? ;)

:confused2: Are you suggesting there were other areas and periods outside the BRWR in the early 1970s that are worth modelling then, Paul?
