Title: What have you driven?
Post by: Alex on September 17, 2012, 07:24:51 PM
Hi,

On looking out my photos of my pranged Sunbeam I came across this.

If memory serves me correctly it's an Abbot self propelled artillery gun. We went to a monster truck rally at Knockhill racing circuit about 18 years ago. I came acros this beast and just had to have a go. It cost £20 for a 10 min drive along an assualt course.

Wife says I had a cheesy grin for the rest of the day. :D

Slight change.
I thought the topic was going to be trains.

Mine was a class 08 in Didcot yard in the eighties. All I can say is 'The good old days'
The driver just stopped and asked if I wanted a go.

A few years ago I was let loose on a class 02-type shunter at Hollycombe. Just on a small stretch of track, but still pretty cool to drive a real train!

The most interesting thing I drove today was a ford connect to and from a site in Park Royal London

The most interesting thing I've driven is a hydrema which is like a cross between a JCB and a forklift/tractor.

The only Train I have driven is a Green Class 20 under my mates supervision at the GCR Loughborough.

The only plane I flew was a De Haviland Chipmunk under supervision whilst in the ATC on an air experience flight at RAF Newton many years ago. (RAF Newton now bulldozed and land sold off!!)

The fastest thing I drove was a Porsche on the autobahn in Germany between Elmpt and Monchengladbach where I hit 155mph (young and foolish :-[)

The only Boat I have ever sailed myself is a pedollo at the seaside :smiley-laughing:

Best thing I ever drove and owned was a Triumph TR3a sports car and a few Holden cars that I had modified, one of which did the standing 1/4 mile in less than 14sec back in 1963 and a Honda 750 4 cylinder motor bike, nothing really exciting.

Owl,

When were you flying at Newton??? I was a Space Air Cadet for a few years from 1978-1983 with No 1(F) City of Leicester Squadron, and we used to do our flying at RAF Newton as well.

Only out-of-the-ordinary I've really done was a motor experience day thingy (technical term) at Silverstone:

-Mondeo on the most ridiculous skid rig ever - you could basically blow on it hard from the side and it'd 360.

-Caterham 7, for which the instruction was "there is no concept of 'clutch control' on this car.  Rev to around 10k, drop the clutch, and start steering".

-Rally 206 (I think - is it the 206s or 106s they use for rallying?).  Anyway, nice churned mud course, right angle bends, the facing of the car, the travel of the car, and the direction of the steering being three largely independent variables :)  After I'd thought I was driving like a nutter, swap to the navigator spot and let a professional driver show you how it's really done - I have a great deal of respect for the navigators being able to read a map and give directions in those conditions!

I'm strongly considering doing a train driver experience day for my 40th next year - both the Colne Valley Railway and the East Anglian Railway Museum close to me offer them.  It's a lot of money I could be spending on models though...

I was 1947 Sqn (Birstall) ATC, I flew a couple of times with 7 AEF (air experience Flight) (East Midlands) at RAF Newton between 1991-1994. Funnily enough I didn't join the RAF, I ended up in the Royal Engineers instead!

Got many fond memories of Newton. I remember flying with Sqn Ldr Bill Purchase, who later on tried to fly a chipmunk solo around the world on a charity flight. They used the rear seat for a modified fuel tank for extra distance.
Unfortunately he didn't make it. He crashed in Seberia and had to get rescued.

Unfortunately Newton now part of the history books. It recently got knocked down. Land sold for development

I know how you feel! First vehicle I ever drove on the road was a Trolley Bus, couple of London Double Deckers (yes, in New Zealand), a Leyland Atlantean ex Ribble (was bought by the Salvation Army), two Leyland Leopards, an AEC Reliance (thats the buses), two Ford Mondeos, a Mitsubishi Mirage, BMW118, Honda Accord, Ganz and an English Electric (for the Trains), now I drive DC class Locomotives hauling (or pushing) ex BR Mark 2 D, E and F coaches around suburban Auckland!

Being Cambrian Coast I believe you use ERTMS now? If so, I wouldnt mind learning a bit about it - we are about to have it dumped on us over here!

I usually drive myself around.

But I have driven Ivor (the Slade Green depot class 08) and was in the cockpit of a 747 for take off at LA (the pilot banked it so I could get a better view of the bay) and landing at Heathrow (five point seat belts and headphones for contact with ground control).

I've driven plenty of cars and vans but to be quite honest I find them all pretty dull although I drove across the Hay desert in Aus in a three speed column change Ford falcon. Otherwise in general I find driving pretty boring and prefer to be chauffeured.

Never 'driven' a train mainly because I have no interest in British railways but if the opportunity arose to drive a nice early restored EMD I'd be there ;D  Car history is all pretty boring but I have 'taken control' of a Grob Tutor, Scout helicopter and back seated in a Hawk (pulled 6g and it hurts  ) and Tornado GR1 as well as many mil pax trips fixed wing and rotary.  Oh yes, I fly a Typhoon every day too to make sure it is all working, mil sim that is  ;)

I used to drive a 1937 Austin Ruby.

I drove Blackpool No 40 (1926) at Crich Tramway Museum a few times.

I drove a vintage open-staircase bus up London's Haymarket (with passengers on board) when it was a tourist attraction for the then newly opened LT Museum at Covent Garden.

Never driven a train though ...

Ooh,speaking of bikes,I've ridden a few of those as well.
I took a CBT course on a Honda CG125,bought a Yamaha SR125 of a mates wife, passed my full bike test via direct access route on a Honda CB500.Both the CG125 and CB500 being standard motorcycle traing hacks, then about six months after passing my bike test in September 2000,I bought my lovely 1994 Honda CBR600Fp.I still own this bike althougj I haven't rode it for some time(about 3 years now).I rode a Ducati 748s once whilst my bike was in for a major service and fell in love with them.
Problem was that back then, they were terribly expensive to own and also unreliable so I didn't buy one for that reason.
The CBR might be the bike equivalent of a Ford Escort or similar car but they are very reliable and can get a bit of a wiggle on when your feeling frisky.
Only problem I have is that I have lost about six stone in weight over the years so my leathers don't fit anymore, that and it needs tyres, battery, mot, tax and insurance.
All expensive on top of a model railway habit.
