Hi Guys,
My Favorite Train Related film of all time is 'Von Ryan's Express' staring Frank Sinatra.
Im also gonna watch the new(ish) Denzel Washington film called 'Unstoppable' tonight. Got the DVD from the video shop. I will let you all know later if it's any good. Apparently it's about a run away train with a cargo of highly toxic chemicals thats heading for a major US city!! :o :o
ive always liked the original lady killers
anything but Brief Encounter - the most over rated film of them all
Let me see..............John Frankenheimer's 'The Train' is quite amazing, and 'The First Great Train Robbery', 1978, has some great scenes.
Oh Mr Porter has a fantastic charm to it, too; but I also highly rate the films noted above.
The Great Escape has some good railway episodes, and it's fun spotting the continuity errors in 'The Cassandra Crossing'!!!!!
I like the opening sequence in Murder on The Orient Express. The music set to the starting of the train is spot on.
My favourite train film though is The Titfield Thunderbolt. Classic bit of Ealing Comedy :)
Burt Lancaster in "The Train".

Can't believe I forgot that one!! The last ten minutes especially are just so emotional!!!
I have to admit a fondness for the old Childrens Film Foundation movie 'Runaway Railway'. Ronnie Barker, Jon Pertwee...

Sad to say but.................. :-[
"The Great St Trinians Train Robbery"
it must be something to do with the upper school..........oops I mean lower school girls I think :-[
It has to be "The taking of Pelham 123"
Have just glanced at "runaway railway ". Those CFF films were wonderful !!
I shall sit down and enjoy it properly later!!
Surprised someone hasn't mention Thomas or that Hogwarts Express stuff. ;D ;D
The Titfield Thunderbolt wins it for me, with honourable mentions for The Taking of Pelham 1-2-3 (original) and The Great St. Trinians Train Robbery.
Unstoppable is also well worth a watch.

Yes, some were released by Network DVD, 2 on each DVD with a few extras. There were 4 volumes, titled 'Saturday Morning Pictures 1-4'. Some classics there, including a very young Denis Waterman in 'Go-Kart GO!', a football one with all the 1960's Man Utd team as guests, actors like Patrick Troughton etc etc. Unfortunately they seem to be deleted and fetch quite a bit second hand nowadays I believe. I managed to get all 4 when they were released luckily. There are probably more on youtube tho ;)

I do not think I have a favourite, a lot of films made had a train in, I think Von Ryans express has been mentioned, then another is Bridge over the river Kwai.

very good one and the remake wasn't done too badly either.
If we're including underground railways, I can sneak a tram one in too then.

really funny Aussie film.
Actually, that reminds me of a wonderful 1972 British horror film, called "Death Line" about cannibals living in a disused London Underground station.

Donald Pleasance is wonderful as a seedy Scotland Yard detective investigating the disappearances of folk from Holborn tube.

I remember that one I think, wasn't that the one where the only English they had learnt was "MInd the Doors!" ?
That's the one - they just don't make 'em like that anymore!
Can't believe nobody's mentioned The Railway Children. Classic book and movie with great British cast - might seem a bit twee nowadays though
Well, for me it has to several that have been mentioned already like the excellent Unstoppable, The Cassandra Crossing and The Great St. Trinians Train Robbery.
But there's also Murder on the Orient Express, The Lady Vanishes, The Great Train Robbery (with Sean Connery and actually filmed in Ireland!) and of course THOMAS THE TANK ENGINE! :smiley-laughing:
Do watch the Connery film if you get a chance folks. There are genuine 100 year old 0-6-0s used, and in one scene the film helicopter could barely catch the loco as it was shifting so fast. It's also a fascinating glimpse of the Irish rail infrastructure as it was thirty years ago. Ireland dieselised completely as early as 1963: but everything else was left untouched!

Anyone recall a British comedy called "The Wrong Box", set in Victorian England that featured a very well-staged train crash on the LSWR?

I was going to add The Railway Children. I have loved that film since I was a kid. I wanted Bernard Cribbins' job  . (And I was more than a little bit in love with Jenny Agutter ;D ).
Wonder if anyone caught the remake/modern version? Jenny Agutter played the mother!! And Bernard Cribbins role was no other than Rab C Nesbitt (Gregor Fisher).
I did see that. I thought it was good but less atmospheric than the original. And Jenny Agutter is still lovely.
Has any one seen the 'Big freight series' of train DvD's out and about, although not a film, definately train related?
Probably the best model railway related film: the train chase scene from the 'Wallace and Gromit: The Wrong Trousers' episode. It's short but pure fun.

Its best feature regarding to modeller's needs is the track package that's never running out of tracks.
