Latest news is good. He had a procedure this morning, which he tells me was successful.

A bit of a long winded replied (proves it's me, I guess)
Many thanks to you all for your very kind wishes over what has been a very worrying time.
For background, I had a triple bypass op 10 years ago and was fitted with my own personal defibrillator. This is set to trigger at 200bpm heart rate, and then it's loss of driving licence for 6 months, higher insurance etc. For a single chap like me that's the equivalent of removing my legs and all independence.
On Weds 15th July my heart started racing for some reason. It has done this on rare occasions in the past but usually settles back into normal rhythm after about 48 hours. Come the Friday morning it was still racing at some 140bpm. I had a funeral to go to on the Monday so I left it until after the funeral before phoning 111, who arranged for me to go straight to Chorley hospital (do not pass 'Go'. Do not collect £200)
I lay in A & E on a trolley for 7 hours with an intravenous drip via canula before being transferred to the Medical Assessment unit and more drips. I was seen by a consultant late Tuesday morning who lambasted the staff for doing things all wrong as he could hear 'bubbling' in chest cavity. A few hours later I was moved to the Cardiac Critical Care unit. By this time my heart was knocking on 165bpm. More drips. More wires.
I was put on a supposed miracle drug (amiodarone) but 36 hours later I was hitting heights of 180bpm. At least come Thursday morning I came off any drips. I was told I'd been booked for a procedure called Cardioversion for Friday morning. This is where they aim electric shocks at your heart to shock it back into normal rhythm but there was a small risk of my defibrillator acting up. Gulp!
At about 11 a.m. Friday (heart rate 153bpm) I was sedated and the Cardioversion took place. An hour later I woke up (I think they let me sleep a little) with a heart rate of 67bpm. They monitored me for about 4 hours (all OK), gave me new meds from the pharmacy and I was out and on my way home.

What you probably know about hospitals
Nurses are mostly caring and patient – doctors/consultants are egotistic, loud, talk too fast and generally treat you like a moron
The food (in Chorley) was of a very good standard and choice
There is no dignity. There is no sleep as, as soon as they see you nodding off, they wake you for a test of some sort. It doesn't help having an 18hr drip via canula in one arm, and being wired for sound (10 wires)
Our fellow inmates were a great band of brothers and the banter between us and the nurses made the whole situation bearable
Cardioversion can work or it can't. It may only last a couple of months. The next step is a procedure called 'Ablation' and is more permanent (one way or another, I guess)
