If I try to increase the font size of something I've typed I use the toolbar symbol and am offered a max size of 7.
If I then change that 7 to 20, all I get is [size20]WHAT I TYPED with no change at all to the font size. Grrrrrrr
hello
hello
Just seeing what you mean
Isn't 7 big enough?

Not really, Chris
Try entering this into Google, assuming you are using Windows: "Make text larger on screen windows"
Are you trying to increase the size you're typing at, for your benefit, or are you trying to emphasise the text in a post?
I agree with
@weave, 7 is plenty large enough for anything in a post.

Size 7 is adequate (I've amended the post I originally tried it on) but would prefer to have gone slightly larger to emphasise the text
The font size button set the font size to a scale value between and 7 (2 being standard?). You can modify the mark-up added to specify font size in pixels or points:
e.g.
80pt
99px
80pt
99px
Making it bold adds more emphasis
