Post by: Arran on April 22, 2026, 03:12:04 PM
HI All

Its time to get my backside in gear if i am to have any hope of getting next container liveries by the N Gauge show in September.

Decided so for are !!!

Maersk 40ft HC in the new Blue livery " i've been getting pestered for this"
Maersk 40ft HC reefer "with e thermoking reefer unit"
ONE    40ft HC reefer  "with a Daikin reefer unit"
MSC 40ft HC in the Brown with gold Logo
MSC 20ft in the Sand colour

So i still need another 20ft and a tank !!!
We were thinking Tex 20ft and a Suttons tank but im open to suggestions

Regards Arran

1980s OCL blue please:

SOU 150858 (https://flic.kr/p/2k9vWRs) by Freight  Engineer (https://www.flickr.com/photos/fr8engineer/), on Flickr

The same period same some nondescript green boxes too - like the incotrans above and below.

Tinsley's 37194 and 37107 head east through Stratford with a Freightliner at 10:45. (https://flic.kr/p/9S78hS) by Jeremy Gould (https://www.flickr.com/photos/jezgould/), on Flickr

I'm sure I've seen a 20' with Evergreen branding, but with the text running top to bottom on the left hand end of the box.

Tanktainer? Tate and Lyle (https://ukrailwaypics.smugmug.com/The-Humble-Box/TheHumbleBox-Type/20-Containers/2MT4)?

I have a sneaky feeling the 20ft OCL is already in the pipeline.

Possibly the ones with the vertical "cti" lettering on?  They seem to pop up frequently in the Paul Shannon books of the 80s era.

CTI boxes were on  the first Freightliner train I saw, probably in the late 60s.
OCL seems really popular on here, so I'll add my name for them, plus Ben Ellerman to represent the Southampton-Barking service on the 70s.

Would definitely buy both OCL and CTI containers.

Actually, I'd buy anything suitable for the 1980s ...

Tanktainer-Liquid Air?

Carried helium inside nitrogen insulation/ sacrificial coolant inside glass fibre insulation. US to Europe, including Felixstowe.

Only remember carrying one other tanktainer westbound to US, possibly Suttons heated type but it was over 40 years ago...

ISO containers are too late for my modelling, but I well remember the Hornby red Manchester Liner ones, and carried loads of them on Montreal service.

Martyn

Later thought- Stolt tanktainer? I think they are rail hauled in UK.

I think 20 footers provide the opportunity for oddball rarities. I'd buy a dozen of any of:

Containerships (https://matts-place.com/intermodal/part4/csfu1267600.jpg)

Cronos Containers (https://matts-place.com/intermodal/part4/crtu0710445.jpg)

Balearia Cargo (https://matts-place.com/intermodal/part4/bolu2901450.jpg)

Pretty sure Arran's already done a Stolt tanktainer.

I will have one of everything proposed! No suggestions on the other gaps. Tex 20' would be good, or maybe TAL in brown with the red Transamerica Leasing building logo.

HC do not appeal to me as they did not exist in the 80s/90s. MSC sand has already been done. Something different would be ideal.

OCL blue
Nedlloyd grey
GOLD brown
Cti red
BEN grey
ACT white
Matson red
Triton brown
Original Suttons would be nice too.

Not on your list but the CAI Red and Cosco blue high cubes from your 1/160 range would be good additions as see them a lot on modern trains

Early 80s designs in the 1/160 range would be much appreciated!  :)

Not sure what they are, but the tank containers that always seem to be at the back of the Inverness Tesco train, seen here:

I note the first tank carries the code "T501 SGIU 000501.8 42KW". The "T501" isn't part of the ISO 6346 system. The meaning is likely internal to the owner.

The rest conforms to the ISO 6346 system:
| Marking | Meaning | What it tells us
| SGIU | Owner prefix | Who owns the tank = Stolt Tank Containers
| 000501.8 | Serial + check digit | Unique ID
| 42KW | ISO tank type | Pressure rating, fittings, insulation

The second tank carries the code "T000913 SGIU 000913.7 42T7". Which confirms the same owner.

OCL blue is still my #1 choice, but Railfreight red/yellow as a 20' box would be nice too:

Hi all,

I've looked at these recently.

The tanks are for LNG - several designs seen already.

Now trying to work out which are the more common types - then work out how to model them.
